The Toronto Maple Leafs and forward David Kampf have been at a standstill this season. It’s evident that Kampf no longer has a role within the organization. Meanwhile, the player is looking to find his way back into the NHL.
Unfortunately for Kampf, that path to the NHL is not going through Toronto. As insider Elliotte Friedman discussed in the Saturday Headlines segment on November 1, Kampf has taken time away from the Maple Leafs’ AHL team to ponder his future.
That situation has ramped up speculation about what the future could hold for Kampf. As such, a trade situation, really any trade, could be win-win for the organization and the player. One team that comes to mind is the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks are in need of center depth, and Kampf could fill that void.
Here’s a look at what this trade idea could look like:
Maple Leafs get:
2026 sixth-round pick
Canucks get:
David Kampf, F
The return may seem completely underwhelming. However, the reality is that the Maple Leafs want to get out from under Kampf’s salary. That’s something that’s been a topic of discussion for quite some time.
Meanwhile, the Canucks get Kampf, an experienced NHL center, who likely gets into their bottom six. With Filip Chytil out indefinitely and Teddy Blueger not quite ready to return, getting Kampf on the club could be a solid solution.
The sixth-round pick would essentially be a token piece to complete the deal. Of course, that pick heads to the Maple Leafs as the Canucks take on Kampf’s full cap hit. If Vancouver wanted the Maple Leafs to retain, the price would certainly change.
Kampf Taking Time away from Maple Leafs Organization to Ponder his Future
As Friedman stated, Kampf is taking some time away from the Maple Leafs organization to ponder his future. Friedman stated the following:
“The Toronto Marlies are playing tonight in Chicago in the American Hockey League, and he’s not with them. I was told there’s a possibility he could play tomorrow, but I think that’s unlikely. David Kampf has taken a couple of days to kind of think about his future. Obviously, he’s not playing with the Maple Leafs right now; he’s in a bit of a roster and salary cap crunch situation, and he got a little bit frustrated. I think everybody understands, he wants to play in the NHL and he’s an NHL player.”
The comments underscore the fact that Kampf is not happy with his current situation. So, the Leafs may have to act sooner rather than later.
Toronto Must Figure out what to Do about Kampf
Ultimately, the situation involving the Toronto Maple Leafs and David Kampf seems to have gone on long enough. The club has to figure out what to do about the 30-year-old forward. The longer the Leafs drag out the situation, the worse it’s going to look.
With injuries piling up around the league, it seems like the best time to make a move is now. The team has an opportunity to at least get something back. But, most importantly, get out from under Kampf’s contract.
