The Seattle Mariners appear highly likely to elevate top prospect Colt Emerson this year, fueling excitement among fans.
Emerson enters the 2026 season as the Mariners’ No. 1 prospect. He also sits at the No. 9 overall prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. Thanks to his rapid development and serious commitment to the sport, he has quickly become Seattle’s prospect to watch. Emerson’s potential as an impact player in the near future is evident, even at just 20 years old.
What to Know about Emerson
“Emerson is just going to be one of the biggest stories of spring training,” said baseball writer Jordan Shusterman.
He added, “Emerson is one of the best prospects in baseball. He’s not really getting quite the national hype that Julio or Kelenic did, but I think maybe even by the middle of spring training he could be talked about in that way.”
Despite being just 20 years old, Emerson has already gained experience well beyond his years. He participated in two scrimmages ahead of the Mariners’ American League Division Series against the Tigers. He was later designated as an emergency injury reserve. Despite knowing he was unlikely to play, the designation likely came as a vote of confidence for the young player.
“Colt is a grown-up,” Jerry Dipoto, Mariners President of Baseball Operations said of Emerson. “He was a grown-up when he was 17, and that much was evident when [former assistant general manager] Andy [McKay] met with him on their family farm, before we ever drafted him. We knew that about his makeup. If you’ve got that walking in the door, it certainly helps.”
Upcoming Season
Looking ahead to the 2026 season, Emerson could find himself competing for a role at third base. If he proves ready, he may slot in as the left-handed side of a platoon with Ben Williamson. His best opportunity to earn that role will come during the 2026 Cactus League, where spring training performances often play a major role in roster decisions.
The timing works in Emerson’s favor. Several Mariners will likley participate in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Their absence opens up additional at-bats and defensive reps. This gives Emerson an opportunity to participate in major-league competition.
Offensively, Emerson has already established himself as a power hitter. Back in June, 2025, Emerson made a swing adjustment that unlocked more power. He switched from a leg kick to a toe tap, and the change helped him maintain better balance, improve barrel depth, and stay more controlled at the plate. He hit 16 home runs across the the minor league during the 2025 season.
“It really does seem like he’s going to show up to spring training having gotten to Triple-A, still only 20 years old… (and) they’re going to give him every chance to win the job,” Shusterman added. “Now, that’s a lot to expect of a kid, but he seems to have the right makeup on and off the field to really make something like that happen.”
If Emerson capitalizes on his upcoming opportunity, the Mariners may soon be adding another key player to their already competitive lineup.
