The Seattle Mariners have been one of the pleasant surprises of the MLB season, and the team went all-in during the recent trade deadline. Yet, the Mariners could be in danger of losing one of the team’s recent major additions.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller offered some early predictions for MLB free agency. The analyst’s latest projections are sure to anger Mariners fans as Miller predicts third baseman Eugenio Suarez will bolt in free agency.
Miller believes the Mariners’ biggest threat will come from an “unexpected team” and named the Nationals as well as Athletics as possible landing spots.
“Hard to imagine a slugger who is already 34 years old will be able to get enough years on a deal to reach nine figures,” Miller wrote in an August 4, 2025, story titled, “Way-Too-Early MLB Free-Agency Predictions Post-2025 Trade Deadline.” “But if Suárez ends up hitting 50 home runs this season, who knows? Maybe he could get a four-year, $100M contract. (Prediction: Suárez doesn’t actually sniff $100M, but does get a lucrative two-year deal from an unexpected team, like the Athletics or Nationals.)”
Let’s explore Suarez’s future with the Mariners.
Mariners 3B Eugenio Suarez Will Head Into MLB Free Agency Months After Blockbuster Trade
Suarez is in the final months of a seven-year, $66 million deal that the slugger initially signed with the Cincinnati Reds. Spotrac is less bullish on Suarez’s market value projecting a two-year, $24 million contract for the All-Star.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan is among those to praise the Mariners for their aggressive deadline move with the Arizona Diamondbacks to reunite with Suarez.
“Give the Mariners credit. They got the best bat at the deadline in Eugenio Suárez, filled a position of need at first base with Josh Naylor, deepened their bullpen with left-hander Caleb Ferguson and did so without sacrificing Colt Emerson, Jonny Farmelo, Ryan Sloan, Jurrangelo Cijntje, Michael Arroyo, Lazaro Montes, Harry Ford or Felnin Celesten, all top 100-caliber prospects,” Passan detailed in an August 4, article titled, “Jeff Passan’s 2025 MLB trade deadline awards.”
“… By no means did they fleece the Diamondbacks for Suárez and Naylor. Arizona needed pitching and got quality arms in both deals, and Tyler Locklear should be the team’s first baseman for the next half-decade. But this deadline was about an organization that has drafted as well as any in the 2020s shedding its relative conservatism to take a run in a year where there is no favorite. That’s worthy of some Robuchon potatoes.”
Mariners President Jerry Dipoto on Trades: ‘(Wanted to) See If We Can Win the World Series’
After giving up assets to land Suarez, it would be a major surprise if Seattle did not make a strong push to re-sign Suarez. The Mariners are sure to have competition given his strong All-Star campaign, but Bleacher Report’s prediction is mere speculation.
Suarez is hitting .241 with 90 RBI and 37 home runs in his first 112 appearances with the Diamondbacks and Mariners in 2025. The veteran is off to a slow start with the Mariners batting just .130 through his first six games since arriving in Seattle. Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto has not been afraid to reveal the team’s World Series aspirations following the deadline deals.
“We feel like this team deserved it, the opportunity to just go out and see if we can win the World Series,” Dipoto explained, per Seattle Sports. “We feel like we have as good a lineup as there is in our league.
“Our rotation, if our guys do the things that they do, has proven that they can be as good as anybody in this league.”
