The demise of New York Jets rookie tight end Mason Taylor was greatly exaggerated.
Head coach Aaron Glenn announced last week that Taylor had suffered a high ankle sprain and would be out at least a week. He missed the preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers and would be re-evaluated down the line.
On Wednesday, August 6, ESPN’s Rich Cimini announced that Taylor would be “out indefinitely” due to this injury. Less than a week later, Taylor, like a phoenix, rose from the ashes with an emphatic return to practice.
Taylor was a full participant in the Jets versus New York Giants joint practice on Tuesday, August 12.
One of the Big Highlights of the Jets-Giants Joint Practice
Taylor was active in both 7-on-7s and 11-on-11s versus the Giants.
One of the splash plays of the day came from backup quarterback Adrian Martinez, who found Taylor on the sideline.
Martinez uncorked a beautiful ball right into the bread basket of Taylor, who made the spectacular diving catch, getting both feet in. The crowd erupted in applause, and J-E-T-S chants were bellowed throughout 1 Jets Drive.
Mason Taylor looked fully healthy to me.
This play sent #Jets fans into a series of J-E-T-S chants during the joint practice versus #Giants.

He didn’t wear any additional bracing or tape around the injured ankle during the entirety of practice.
Head Coach Aaron Glenn Talks Taylor Post Jets-Giants Practice
Coach Glenn was asked about Taylor during his media availability.
He started his answer with a chuckle before responding, “I’ll tell you what, I don’t know if you guys saw the 7 route that he caught. I think it was outstanding the way that he was able to reach and maneuver his feet to stay in bounds on that play. Those are things I expect from him in the passing game. It’s nothing new for that player. The thing is that he has to make sure he comes along at the right pace so we don’t reinjure that ankle again, but he is a fighter, and he wants to be out there. We are going to do everything we can to protect him the right way, but also let him go out there and get his work in. I thought he had a hell of a day.”
Taylor’s Magical Recovery Is Massive News for the Jets
Joe Bartel of RotoWire joined me on “The Manchild Show with Boy Green Digital” last week.
During our conversation, he told me that Taylor has a path to being second on the team in targets or, at worst, third in 2025.
The Jets have Garrett Wilson on offense, who will clearly lead the team in targets, but who steps up after him is a big mystery.
Taylor, suffering a high ankle sprain, was highly concerning news last week. The former LSU product was set to miss serious time in camp and the preseason.
“According to the Cleveland Clinic, it can take as many as six to eight weeks for a high ankle sprain to fully heal. High ankle sprains are more severe than common ankle sprains of the lower, outside part of the ankle,” Dan Treacy of Sporting News shared.
That would have taken away valuable reps and, even more importantly, bonding opportunities with starting quarterback Justin Fields.
This time is precious. It allows Fields and Taylor to get on the same page. It also would have allowed time for offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand to make Taylor a key part of the offense.
Taylor’s magical recovery time quells a lot of those concerns from last week.
