Frankie Montasâ season is over, and quite possibly his time as a New York Met, as well.
The much-maligned pitcher was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday with a UCL injury in his right elbow.
According to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, the injury is significant enough that Tommy John surgery is on the table.
âHeâs got a pretty significant injury there,â Mendoza said prior to the teamâs game against the Atlanta Braves. âWeâve got multiple doctors looking at it to see what weâre dealing with. The first read was that heâs got a pretty big injury.â
Should he need Tommy John, Montas would likely miss most, if not all, of the 2026 season.

How Has Frankie Montas Performed as a Met?
Montas has been a huge disappointment since signing a two-year, $34 million free-agent deal in December. After missing more than two months with a high-grade right lat strain suffered in spring training, the 32-year-old Montas had a 6.38 ERA in eight appearances â including one as a bulk reliever â before being moved permanently to the bullpen on Aug. 12.
Montas has pitched just once since then, allowing one run over two innings in an 11-9 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Aug. 15.
Top prospect Nolan McLean replaced Montas in the rotation, and in Fridayâs 12-7 win over Atlanta, McLean became the first Mets starter other than David Peterson to pitch at least six innings since June 7 â a span of 62 games.
How Much Time Will Frankie Montas Miss?
The early returns on Montasâ injury are not encouraging. Mendoza did not rule out the possibility of Tommy John surgery, which comes with a year-plus rehab period.
According to the New York Postâs Mike Puma, Montas experienced soreness in his bicep Friday after warming up a day prior in Washington. He then underwent an MRI, which revealed damage to his UCL.
The second year in Montasâ deal is effectively a player option, which he is likely to accept given his struggles. Should he opt in, the Mets will owe him $17 million next season regardless of his status on the roster.
How Will the Mets Replace Frankie Montas?
To take Montasâ place on the roster, the Mets recalled reliever Huascar Brazoban from Triple-A Syracuse. In 51.2 innings this season, Brazoban owns a 3.83 ERA to go with two saves.
Because Montasâ role had already been diminished, his absence shouldnât significantly impact the Metsâ current staff.
