The New York Mets added a bullpen weapon to their arsenal Wednesday afternoon.
The Mets acquired submarine-style right-hander Tyler Rogers from the San Francisco Giants for three players, including major-league reliever Jose Butto.
Butto, a 27-year-old reliever who has been great (3-2, 3.64 ERA in 34 games) and was joined by New York’s No. 10 overall prospect, right-hander Blade Tidwell and No. 12 prospect outfielder Drew Gilbert going to San Francisco.
What Are The Mets Getting In Tyler Rogers?
Rogers, who will turn 35 in December, is not a hard thrower but still has impressive numbers. He boasts a 4-3 record with a 1.80 ERA and a paltry 0.86 WHIP in 50 innings over 53 appearances as one of San Francisco’s best high-leverage relievers this season.
However, Rogers is a rental, since he will be an unrestricted free agent after the season.
Though he seems dominant against right-handed hitting, due to his submarine-style, he has great numbers against righties and lefties. Righties have a .505 OPS against Rogers and left-handed hitters have just a .542 OPS, and he has surrendered just three home runs this year.
Rogers is 26-20 with a 2.79 ERA in 396 2/3 innings over 392 games. He can lock down the ninth inning, since he has 19 career saves, but has been best used as a setup man — again, mainly against right-handed hitters.
Tyler is one of the two big-league Rogers brothers — each of whom was traded Wednesday. Taylor Rogers, a left-handed reliever, was dealt from the Cincinnati Reds to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Ke’Bryan Hayes-to-Cincinnati deal.
Still, the Mets ought to be getting a high-leverage reliever based on the cost — especially as a rental — since three players, and two pitchers and two of New York’s top-15 prospects, is an astronomical price to pay for a setup man.
Tidwell made four appearances, and two starts, for the Mets this season and went 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA. He is 6-4 with a 4.10 ERA in 79 innings over 17 outings for Triple-A Syracuse.
Gilbert, an outfielder who will turn 25 in September, has slashed .252/.354/.450 in the minors this season. He has spent the bulk of the year in Syracuse and boasts a .777 OPS in Triple-A with 12 home runs.
Still, Rogers will join Mets closer Edwin Diaz, and setup men Reed Garrett and Ryne Stanek as New York’s top relievers. But they may not be finished.
Are The Mets Done Making Trades?
New York paid a hefty prospect premium for Rogers, but with owner Steve Cohen, and smart David Stearns running this deadline, the Mets are hardly finished wheeling and dealing ahead of Thursday’s 6 p.m. ET trade deadline.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Mets have engaged in talks with the Athletics for closer Mason Miller. Miller, who will turn 27 on Aug. 24, is arguably the best-available reliever, since is the hardest-throwing pitcher in the majors.
With Rogers, Miller and Diaz, the Mets would lap the rival Philadelphia Phillies, who they are battling for the National League East crown, in terms of bullpen. The Phils bullpen has been one of their most glaring weaknesses this season, which is why Rosenthal reported Philadelphia is also speaking with the A’s about Miller.
Yet, not to be outdone, the Mets’ intracity rival New York Yankees, who also could use bullpen help, are also engaged in talks for Miller, according to Rosenthal.
