Mets Get More Bad News After Recent Free Agent Target Decision

The reliever market is on fire in the early stages of MLB’s hot stove season. Several of the top relief options are already off the board, as many have been very eager to ink new deals ahead of the 2026 season. The New York Mets got a piece of the pie by signing Devin Williams to a three-year, $51 million contract.

However, New York also lost All-Star reliever Edwin Diaz to NL rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers. And even other teams in the NL East are strengthening their bullpen after the Braves inked a deal with flamethrower Robert Suarez. On Friday, the Mets got more bad news on a potential free agent reliever they could have signed.

Tyler Rogers Signs With Blue Jays

Late Friday night, the Toronto Blue Jays made another notable signing by agreeing to a contract with right-handed reliever Tyler Rogers on a three-year, $37 million deal. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal was first on the report, and the contract also includes a fourth-year vesting option.

Yet another player that the Mets missed out on in the free agent market. At this point, the reliever market is also starting to thin out by the day. The Mets also lost out on closer Ryan Helsley earlier this month.

Tyler Rogers

GettyThe Blue Jays have a great option to give their bullpen a boost after missing on Edwin Diaz & Robert Suarez.

It’s unclear at this moment what Tyler Rogers’ market was like, but he must have had some suitors if he ended up landing a $12.3 million AAV deal as a 34-year-old. Although he’s coming off a 2025 campaign where he posted a 1.98 ERA over 77.1 innings and 81 appearances, Rogers is very much a pitch-to-contact pitcher.

The Mets acquired him back in July from the San Francisco Giants, and he ended up being one of New York’s best relievers down the stretch. Over 27.1 innings with the Mets last season, Rogers gave up just 7 earned runs.

Where Do The Mets Go From Here?

Where do the Mets go from here? At this point, all the top relief options are off the board, and New York will have to get crafty with their signings.

At this moment, the top available options are Luke Weaver, Pete Fairbanks, and Pierce Johnson. It makes sense why the Mets didn’t want to dish out nearly $13 million/year for Rogers, who is aging and can’t strike out many batters, but the time is now for Steve Cohen and David Stearns to consider making a notable signing.

Aside from bullpen help, New York could also use another starter, an outfielder, and now a first baseman after the departure of Pete Alonso.

David Stearns and the rest of the Mets front office is already supposed to be trying to make amends with the fan base after disappointingly missing the 2025 MLB playoffs, but it seems like the Mets are going in the wrong direction. They’ve lost production left and right over the past few weeks.
