The 2025 season was a very disappointing year for the New York Mets. The National League East club finished the campaign with an underwhelming 83-79 record and did not qualify for the playoffs because of it. This was simply unacceptable for a team that had World Series aspirations, especially when noting that they signed superstar slugger Juan Soto during the past offseason.
Now, after missing the playoffs this past season, the Mets are naturally looking to strengthen their roster this offseason. Due to this, they have already been busy this winter and brought in multiple new players. Among the Mets’ most significant newcomers are Jorge Polanco, Marcus Semien, and Devon Williams.
However, with the Mets having big expectations for the 2026 season, it is clear that they should not be done just yet. They would be wise to add another high-impact talent to their roster before the start of the campaign.
One big free agent who the Mets have been heavily linked to this offseason is star slugger Cody Bellinger. It is understandable, as they need another impactful hitter in their lineup if they hope to bounce back in 2026.
Now, a new update on the possibility of Bellinger ending up signing with the Mets has come out that should make their fans optimistic.
Mets Predicted to Sign Cody Bellinger in Free Agency
In a recent article for USA Today, Gabe Lacques predicted where each of the best free agents left would end up signing this offseason. When it came to Bellinger, Lacques matched the former 47-home run slugger with the Mets.
“Mets owner Steve Cohen’s cash and David Stearns’ moderating influence should cook up a really nice package for Bellinger, who should have a couple spots to play in Queens now that Brandon Nimmo’s been traded, Alonso left and Mark Vientos may be on the block. If nothing else, the collection of Bellinger and Jorge Polanco would give the club admirable depth both in a roster and lineup sense,” Lacques wrote.
When looking at the Mets’ current lineup, there is no question that they could use a player like Bellinger right now. As Lacques noted, the Mets lost star slugger Pete Alonso in free agency to the Baltimore Orioles this offseason, and they now have a big hole in their lineup. Bringing in a star like Bellinger would help make up for some of the power lost with Alonso leaving.
Ultimately, with the Mets needing another star in their lineup, Bellinger stands out as a perfect fit.
Yankees Are Mets’ Big-Time Competition in Bellinger Sweepstakes
While the Mets have been linked to Bellinger for much of this offseason, the New York Yankees are still in the hunt for the two-time All-Star. It is not difficult to understand why, as he proved to be a fantastic fit on their roster this past season. In 152 games for the Yankees in 2025, Bellinger had 29 home runs, 98 RBIs, and a .272 batting average.
Furthermore, there is also a possibility that other clubs could pursue Bellinger as the winter carries on. Bellinger’s former team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, has also been viewed as a potential dark-horse club to watch in the sweepstakes.
