Mets Get Ruthless Words After Pete Alonso Signs With Orioles

After losing Edwin Diaz on December 9, the New York Mets have reportedly lost Pete Alonso on December 10. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported on December 10, citing sources, that Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract.

Furthermore, New York didn’t make an effort to keep Alonso, as ESPN reported, citing sources, that the Mets did not extend an offer to the veteran slugger.

Despite Alonso posting a .272/.347/.524 line with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs, while batting behind Juan Soto, Mets president David Stearns, and the rest of the front office didn’t see a need to invest in re-signing Alonso.

In August, the five-time MLB All-Star jumped past Darryl Strawberry’s long-held mark of 252 homers to take over as the Mets’ all-time leader. Additionally, the milestone secured his place among the club’s standout players, with his total now reaching 264.

With this production now out of the Mets’ lineup for 2026, former MLB player Sean Casey didn’t hold back on his comments over New York’s decision to let Alonso walk.

“[Juan Soto] had some pretty good protection in that lineup with a guy like Pete Alonso,” Casey said on December 10 while appearing on MLB Network. “I don’t know what the Mets are thinking. They have the money [to pay him]. He’s a fan favorite; he’s going to hit you close to 40 [home runs] a year. He’s definitely driving in 100 [RBIs].

“These guys don’t just grow on trees. When you talk about the home run leader since 2019, let me name them to you. Aaron Judge, Kyle Schwarber, Pete Alonso, and Shohei Ohtani. You know what I mean? That’s pretty good company, pretty elite company.”

Mets Fans Hit With Bad News on Back-to-Back Days

Moreover, former Mets pitcher Ron Darling also shared his take on Alonso leaving Queens for Baltimore during the same segment.

“[The Mets have] now paid, unless you get a bat, Juan Soto to walk 150 times a year. That’s what you’ve done. One of their young players, [Mark] Vientos or someone else, is going to have to step up.

“Maybe they get in the Kyle Tucker race now for a legit bat in the outfield. But it’s just these last two days have to really be hard on Mets fans. Think about it this way. Brandon Nimmo, a fan favorite, waves his no-trade and agrees to the deal to go to the Texas Rangers.

“You can’t resign Diaz, who didn’t even come back to you to try to get an offer from his former team. And now, Pete Alonso [is] gone. That’s three unbelievably great players, beloved by the fan base, have proven that they can pitch or play in New York. That’s not an easy thing, right? And now, all gone.”

David Stearns Happy With the Mets’ Direction

Nonetheless, on December 9, Stearns spoke with SNY and stated that, despite losing a player like Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers and now Alonso, New York is moving in the right direction despite the losses the team has experienced this offseason.

“We are very optimistic and confident about where our organization is headed, Stearns told the outlet. “We have tremendous ownership support, strong top-end talent at the major league level, and one of the best farm systems in baseball. When you add it all up, we are moving in an outstanding direction.”
