The New York Mets are expected to be active this offseason. MLB’s free agency period opened up last week, and now eligible players can sign with any organization. The outfield is a position of need for the Mets, and there is a lot of production out on the open market for New York to consider signing.
The biggest name on the outfield market is Kyle Tucker, but other big names include a pair of New York Yankees sluggers: Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger. Bellinger opted out of his current deal shortly after the season to test free agency. Could the Mets be in play to sign Cody Bellinger?
Mets Linked to Cody Bellinger in Free Agency
Wouldn’t it be something if, in back-to-back seasons, the Mets could sneakily steal away one of the Yankees’ best outfielders?
Sports Illustrated’s Pat Ragazzo recently came out with a predictions piece, in which the MLB analyst believes the Mets could be players in the Bellinger sweepstakes.
“Don’t be surprised if the Mets are heavily in on the versatile Cody Bellinger in free agency, given their need for defense in both centerfield and at first base. Bellinger is also a fit for the Mets due to his ability to handle the New York market, which he showed while playing for the Yankees this past year.”
Cody Bellinger is one of the top names in the free agent class this season, and while the Yankees may be perceived as the favorites to retain the 30-year-old outfielder, he will likely be seeking the contract with the highest value. Bellinger has posted an OPS+ above 110 in three straight seasons and smashed 29 home runs this season. His bWAR was 5.1 in 2025, as Bellinger continues to prove his defensive presence is worth more than most outfielders’.
Why Cody Bellinger Fits with the Mets?

Cody Bellinger would fill a big hole in the Mets outfield. One of the team from Queens’s top priorities this offseason will be adding outfield depth. It’s expected that Cedric Mullins will sign elsewhere in free agency after a poor tenure with New York.
If the Mets are also unable to retain first baseman Pete Alonso, Bellinger could also help fill that void. Bellinger can play all three outfield positions and first base if needed. The Mets used Jeff McNeil in center field last season, and it’s not to say he was a poor center field option, but Bellinger provides much more offense and is a more natural defender in the outfield.
Bellinger’s 29 home runs this season are the most in his career since his 2019 MVP season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. His contract extension is expected to be in the $180-210 million range, while the number of years Cody Bellinger is seeking is unclear.
