Mets’ Pete Alonso Asking Price ‘Too High’ After Latest Demands

Reports have indicated that New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso is looking to get paid this offseason. From Alonso’s perspective, there’s no better year than now for him to get the money he’s been looking for over the past few years. Unfortunately for the star first baseman, things didn’t go as planned a winter ago. Alonso had to take a short-term deal with an opt-out to return to the Mets, something that neither side was likely expecting.

But as Alonso heads to the free agency market once again after hitting .272 with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs, there’s no debate that a team should pay him. All he’s done throughout his career at 30 years old is swing the bat at a high level, proving to be one of the top power hitters in the sport. Despite that reality, NJ.com’s Manny Gomez shared that Alonso might just be too expensive for them.

“With the first base market being limited, the best fit for the Mets would be to re-sign Pete Alonso. The problem is, like last offseason, his asking price is currently too high.

“The latest reports have Alonso seeking a seven-year deal. Experts and analysts all agree that the asking price is too high, especially considering that he took a huge step back defensively last season, and could be looking at more time at DH… If the Mets can’t re-sign Alonso, another good option might be Josh Naylor, who’s currently with the Seattle Mariners,” he wrote.

Should the Mets Pay Pete Alonso?

The price will always be the main thing for any player on the market, even for a team like the New York Mets, a squad that seemingly has unlimited funds. The reality is, the Mets just had one of their most disappointing seasons in franchise history, and need to make massive changes. Alonso wasn’t at fault for all of their struggles, but he has to be blamed for some of it, too, as one of the leaders of this organization.

How Much Will Pete Alonso Garner in Free Agency?

It remains uncertain if the New York Mets have a price in mind that they want to stay under. When examining what he could get on the open market, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter had Alonso coming in at a seven-year, $210 million deal. Alonso reportedly wants a seven-year deal this winter.

“Pete Alonso was a free agent for the first time last offseason, and he failed to find the long-term deal he was seeking, ultimately finding his way back to the Mets on a two-year, $54 million deal that paid him $30 million in 2025 with a $24 million player option for 2026…

“Predicted Contract: 7 years, $210 million. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Alonso is looking for a seven-year deal, and this time around he might get it, especially if someone gives the Mets a serious run for their money in retaining his services. He is one of the few hitters capable of transforming a lineup, and a $30 million AAV would make him one of the highest-paid first basemen in MLB history,” he wrote.

$30 million AAV isn’t a bad number for someone like Alonso, but if he has to be a designated hitter towards the back end of that contract, there’s a reason to believe the Mets might be hesitant to pay him that much.
