Mets’ Pete Alonso Draws Strong Contract Prediction

New York Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso is getting ready to hit the open free agent market in early November, as he declared he would be opting out of his current deal with the Mets on the last day of the MLB regular season.

After the New York team from Queens missed the playoffs altogether, it’s time to see how much David Stearns and Steve Cohen value Alonso and would be willing to pay him to keep him on the Mets.

Due to Alonso’s large amount of production, there’s no doubt his contract will be among the highest AAVs in this year’s free agency class, but the total value will depend on which team is willing to commit to him for the longest amount of time. Mike Puma reports that Alonso is seeking a seven-year deal.

Pete Alonso Could Get Contract Extension in the $200M Range

If an MLB team (like the Mets) is willing to commit to Alonso for seven years, his contract extension will likely reach the $200 million mark.

In a recent predictions piece by Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter, Pete Alonso is predicted to sign a seven-year deal worth $210 million:

“Pete Alonso was a free agent for the first time last offseason, and he failed to find the long-term deal he was seeking, ultimately finding his way back to the Mets on a two-year, $54 million deal that paid him $30 million in 2025 with a $24 million player option for 2026.”

“Predicted Contract: 7 years, $210 million”

Alonso is now on the other side of 30 and will turn 31 in December, which isn’t ideal for long-term contract negotiations. However, he continues to put up monster offensive seasons year after year. In 162 games this season, his OPS+ was 144, and he clubbed 38 home runs and drove in 126 runs. The good news for Alonso’s free agent sweepstakes is that he has not done anything to hurt his value. He’s an everyday first baseman who consistently records 75+ extra base hits each season. Alonso has also been named to four straight All-Star games.

Will the Mets Re-sign Pete Alonso?

Only time will be able to tell if the Mets re-sign Alonso, but they are certainly on the short list of teams that will be able to. Some other MLB teams that may make a run at Alonso could be the Boston Red Sox, as they need a first baseman.

A reunion with the Mets seems like the most plausible option for the “Polar Bear”, but his free agency could become a bidding war. If it does, it will then be up to the Mets ownership group and front office if they are willing to commit to Alonso long-term.

One thing is certain, though, the Alonso free agency sweepstakes will be one of the bigger storylines to follow this MLB offseason. He could re-sign with the Mets in the first week, or he draws it out and leaves Mets fans wondering if he has played his last game in a Mets uniform. There’s only a handful of names that are bigger than Alonso in this year’s free agent class.
