Mets’ Pete Alonso Gets $100 Million Contract Prediction Heading Into Free Agency

The New York Mets have an upcoming contract decision again with star first baseman Pete Alonso. Alonso has the opportunity to opt out of his two-year, $54 million deal, and considering how well he’s swung the bat this season, it looks pretty likely that’ll be the case.

Throughout the 2025 campaign, Alonso has continued to be one of the top power hitters in Major League Baseball, hitting .264 with 26 home runs, 93 RBIs, and an .861 OPS. Alonso ranks 12th in home runs, third in runs batted in, and 16th in OPS.

Could Pete Alonso Test the Market Again?

That type of production usually gets players paid, so the New York Mets must understand what’s to come for the Florida product.

When searching for what that contract could be, Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors recently predicted that the Mets might have to hand out a four-year deal worth around $25 million annually. He noted that a five-year deal could also be possible, but either way, $100 million over four seasons or a five-year deal seems more than fair for a player of his caliber.

“The two-year, $54MM contract Alonso signed last winter paid him $30MM this season with a $24MM player option for the 2026 campaign. If he and the Mets don’t agree to a longer-term deal between now and when that option decision comes due, he’s a lock to turn it down and head back to the market. Much has been made of Alonso rejecting a seven-year, $158MM extension from the Mets several years ago.

“He’s already pocketed $50.5MM in salary in two years since turning that down, however, and bringing home another $107.5MM over the next five years doesn’t at all feel out of the question. We saw a 34-year-old Christian Walker land three years and $60MM last winter. He’s a better defender, but Alonso will play 2026 at age 31. A four-year deal worth around $25MM annually or a five-year deal in the $22-23MM range seems plausible,” he wrote.

Can the Mets Keep Their Slugger?

When speaking about the situation, former New York Mets general manager Zack Scott, who only briefly served as the team’s general manager, stated that Alonso will likely opt out of his deal, even saying that it’s “inevitable.”

He doesn’t know how things will unfold for the Mets, but he spoke about some things he’d be looking for if he were in New York’s spot right now.

“A front office perspective is always forward-looking. It’s always, ‘What are we buying? What kind of performance can we expect, reasonably, over the term of this contract we’re talking about?” Scott said when asked about how he’d handle Alonso’s upcoming contract negotiations if he were David Stearns.

“So [Alonso] is going to decline. It’s inevitable. We don’t always know when. There are some things you can learn from looking at players of his type… those guys might not age great, and that’s why you might be a little more cautious,” he added, per Grant Young of SI.

When they signed Alonso to a two-year deal with an opt-out after the first season, the New Mets likely understood that he’d decline, so there shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. However, it remains uncertain if the front office views him as a $100 million player over four seasons. Everything should say yes, but it’s unsure until everything gets finalized.
