The New York Mets will need to be one of the most active teams in free agency this winter after one of the most disappointing seasons in baseball history a year ago. The Mets faced challenges from top to bottom, and missing the postseason makes it clear that changes are necessary.
At the top of the Mets’ list in terms of what they need to do in free agency, Pete Alonso is right there. Alonso is one of the top-hitting first basemen in MLB and arguably among the best three power hitters in the league.Â
However, he may become too expensive for the Mets, and if that’s the case, other teams should be willing to pay him. Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently predicted that the Boston Red Sox could be one of them, but listed that Alonso could land a six-year, $182 million deal.Â
âAlonso became the Metsâ all-time home run leader this year (heâs now at 264), and he put together a nice rebound season after a down 2024, hitting 38 bombs and leading the National League with 41 doubles. He is beloved in Queens, and the feeling is mutual.Â
âThe Mets were not willing to give him a long-term contract last offseason, and if they donât change their tune this time around, theyâll probably lose him. Alonso has belted 37 or more homers in each of the last five seasons and although heâs a below-average defender at first base, he works at it and heâs durable, having played all 162 games in each of the past two seasons. Alonso has a player option worth $24 million heâs expected to decline. He made $30 million in 2025… Best team fits: Mets, Phillies, Red Sox, Mariners, Rangers. Contract prediction: 6-years, $182 million,â he wrote.
Do the Mets Want to Pay Pete Alonso?
The New York Mets understand that they’ll have to make a decent offer if they want to keep Alonso around. According to a report from Mike Puma of the New York Post, Alonso isn’t willing to take a six-year deal now. Puma reported seeking a seven-year deal, likely making his contract even more expensive than the $182 million Bowden predicted.Â
âAlonso, who turns 31 in December, is expected to seek a contract of at least seven years â a length consistent with deals the playerâs agent, Scott Boras, completed in recent seasons for Marcus Semien and Matt Chapman at the same age (Chapman received a six-year extension from the Giants after his first season with the club on a different contract)…
âCould Alonso become a primary DH? Itâs a reality the slugger has acknowledged is likely at some point in his next contract, according to a source, but itâs unclear how soon Alonso would be open to such a change,â Puma wrote.
Are the Red Sox a Fit for Pete Alonso?
If the Boston Red Sox are looking to add a first baseman, which would make sense considering where the position stands as a team, someone like Alonso could make perfect sense.Â
However, Puma also reported that he could eventually become a DH, which the Red Sox must figure out.Â
Giving a designated hitter nearly $200 million, even if it’s only for three or so years, likely wouldn’t make too much sense for Boston.
