Mets’ Pete Alonso Proposes Rule Change Fans Would Love, but MLB Would Hate

The 2025 campaign has been a good one for New York Mets‘ star first baseman Pete Alonso. After failing to get the sort of contract he was looking for in free agency last offseason, Alonso is in the process of putting together arguably the most complete campaign of his career, as he appears poised to cash in on a massive new deal in a few months.

For now, Alonso is enjoying the All-Star festivities after being selected to participate in the star-studded clash for the fourth-straight year. Things are going great for Alonso when it comes to his career in the majors, but that doesn’t mean everything is perfect. In that vein of thought, the former National League Rookie of the Year unveiled a suggestion for a rule change that fans would surely love.

Alonso emerged from seemingly out of nowhere back in 2019 to become one of the top sluggers in the game of baseball. As a rookie, Alonso smashed a league-leading 53 home runs while also driving in 120 runs and hitting .260. Those numbers earned him an All-Star selection and a seventh-place finish in the National League MVP race, in addition to his aforementioned Rookie of the Year Award.

Since then, Alonso has been one of the most consistent home run hitters in the league. And yet, he couldn’t earn anything better than the two-year, $54 million contract the Mets handed him in free agency last offseason. That money is nothing to scoff at, though, and Alonso has a player option after the 2025 season, which he will surely utilize if he continues to rake like he has so far this season (.280 BA, 21 HR, 77 RBI, .908 OPS).

It’s safe to say that Alonso is pretty good at the game of baseball, but in his eyes, there are still changes that could be made to improve the game. When asked about a rule he would change if he could, Alonso said he wants MLB to allow hitters and pitchers to fight each other, similar to how the NHL lets their players fight on the ice during their games.

“I think it should be hockey style,” Alonso said. “No teams, no nothing, because that’s when people can, like, seriously get hurt. So, I think if you want to go out and charged the mound, then you should be able to. But if the pitcher or hitter charges, and they don’t want to fight, and they take a knee, then they don’t have to fight. But if someone charges the mound, it’s 1 v. 1 hockey style. And then that’s it.”

Should MLB Implement This Proposed Rule Change?

Considering how fighting is one of the most popular aspects of hockey in the eyes of fans, there’s no doubt that baseball fans would love this idea. The problem is that there is almost certainly no way MLB would allow this to happen, given that fighting has never been a part of the game of baseball.

Alonso actually lays out a fairly solid idea, rather than just suggesting a complete free-for-all, but it’s more likely that you will see pigs fly before you see this rule become a part of MLB. Instead, fans will just have to sit back and continue to watch Alonso hit bombs as he attempts to earn himself a massive new deal in free agency this upcoming offseason.
