Mets Receive Bad News on Mason Miller to Fill Edwin Diaz Role

The New York Mets signed Devin Williams this offseason, but lost Edwin Diaz in the process. However, the team could be looking at the trade market to replace the production lost with the closer leaving to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Last season, Diaz walked just 14 batters over 66⅓ innings, struck out 98, converted 28 of 31 save opportunities, and posted a 1.63 ERA with the Mets. As a result, it won’t be easy to find someone who can help replace this production and put all that pressure on Williams, who struggled at times last season with the New York Yankees, wouldn’t be wise.

On December 13, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that the Mets are one of the teams inquiring about San Diego Padres‘ Mason Miller. However, Heyman did provide bad news for the Mets or any other team keen on the fireballer reliever.

“Many teams (including the Mets) are inquiring on Mason Miller, one of the top few arms in MLB and the hardest thrower,” Heyman wrote on X. “The Padres will listen but they love him as much as anyone and would need to be overwhelmed.”

If the Padres move Miller, they’ll probably seek a hefty prospect return, which complicates things for the Mets. New York are also connected to Detroit Tigers‘ Tarik Skubal, who would come with a similarly steep prospect price.

Edwin Diaz Takes Subtle Shot at Mets

As the search to help replace Diaz continues, on December 12, the former Mets closer met with the media as the newest Dodger and threw some shade at his former team in the process.

“I chose the Dodgers because they are a winning organization,” Diaz told reporters. “I’m looking to win, and I think they have everything to win.”

Moreover, his brother, Alexis Diaz, gave the Dodgers a glowing review that helped the former Mets closer make his decision to head to Los Angeles.

“I did talk to Alexis a little bit when the conversation was getting closer to signing with the Dodgers,” Diaz added (h/t MLB Network). “He told me that they are a really good organization. They treat every player like they are all really good players, which was something I was looking for. He told me great things about the Dodgers. Makes it [an] easy [decision] for me.”

Mets Make a Free Agent Move

After losing Pete Alonso and Diaz in recent days, the Mets made a significant addition, agreeing to a two-year, $40 million deal with free-agent infielder Jorge Polanco, according to multiple reports, including  The Athletic’s Will Sammon and Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Polanco’s 2025 performance shows why the Mets were ready to invest starter-level money: 2.6 WAR, 26 homers, 78 RBIs, and an .821 OPS across 138 games. That’s meaningful production, and it’s not just raw power—he paired his home runs with a well-rounded offensive season, looking more like the hitter who punished mistakes from both sides of the plate rather than the one who struggled through 2024 in Seattle.

What matters most for New York is how Polanco has been used recently. Over the past two seasons, he has mostly played second base and DH, which is key for a Mets roster constantly juggling too many holes with limited solutions. He offers a true switch-hitting power option the team can slot into the middle of the lineup without forcing a defensive fit every day.
