The New York Mets don’t seem eager to overspend in free agency, which is why they’ve yet to make a big splash signing. Moreover, they also appear quiet in the trade market as David Stearns, the team’s president of baseball operations, might not want to part with top prospects.
As a result, it might take shrewd signings or trades by Stearns to improve a Mets team that failed to make the playoffs. In an SNY video posted on Jan. 7, Dan Graca of “Baseball Night in New York” presented his out-of-the-box trade that New York could make to bolster the team, which is going after Los Angeles Angels‘ Mike Trout.
“Let’s go all the way out to Anaheim, and there’s a guy out there who was arguably the best player of his generation, but he’s just kind of like wasting away right now with the Angels,” Graca said. “I think you know who I’m talking about. It’s Mike Trout.
“Now, look, you’re going to say you’re crazy, right? But this is outside the box. Look, he’s still got five more years on his contract. Remember, the Angels just paid off Anthony Rendon to basically go away. Yes, [the Angels] would have to eat some money here.”
What Could Mike Trout Bring to the Mets?
Moreover, Graca laid out what Trout, at this stage of his career, would bring to New York.
“You’re not asking Trout to be a center fielder every single day like in his prime years, but he could be a legitimate DH, right-handed bat, for you,” Graca added. “The Mets don’t have just true right-handed hitters that scare you. I mean, if you get Trout off his feet, why the heck not? He comes closer to home. He’s a South Jersey guy. Outside the box. Mike Trout to the Mets.”
After seeing former teammate Shohei Ohtani win back-to-back World Series titles with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Trout has to ask himself if playing on a team with zero title aspirations is the way he wants to end the final years of his career.
Additionally, on a Mets team, Trout would be the second- or third-best player, but after so many years in Anaheim, does the veteran want the pressure spotlight of New York?
Mets Are Looking to Improve
The Mets appear to want to improve their lineup and have been linked to outfielders Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker. On Jan. 5, The Athletic’s Will Sammon appeared on SNY’s “Baseball Night in New York“ to share whether the Mets are a serious suitor for Tucker.
“I would suspect that [Tucker is] the crown jewel of this free agent class, and he probably has other options that may be better,” Sammon said. “We’ll see, because [the Mets are] always going to lurk, they’re always going to linger, they’re going to check in on guys, and they have the resources to make things very interesting.”
Furthermore, Sammon gave an update on the Mets’ interest in Cody Bellinger.
“They’ll check in on it, and if this market is not what he wants it to be, they could swoop in,“ Sammon added. “To your point, Sal, they could be that team that uses those resources of Steve Cohen to their advantage and say, ‘Hey, here’s a shorter offer, but the AAV, the annual average value, the dollars, it’s going to be pretty high.‘ That does entice guys sometimes.”
