The New York Mets are in a precarious position heading into July, and as MLB’s trade deadline approaches, New York could certainly afford to add another piece or two. As the starting rotation is concerned, the Mets are relying on some of their arms to return from the Injured List and be productive once again. But New York could also use another outfielder.
As for the Boston Red Sox, they are also in a bizarre situation. After they just traded away star Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, nobody truly knows what they will do. However, what is known is that multiple teams have a strong interest in center fielder Jarren Duran, who could be moved by the end of July.
In this blockbuster trade proposal, Jarren Duran is dealt to Queens in return for catcher Francisco Alvarez, prospect Jonah Tong, and right-handed prospect Nate Dohm.
ESPN Insider’s Comment on Mets Rumor
In a recent report by ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel, Jarren Duran is ranked as the second most attractive trade candidate, and the New York Mets are named as one of the best fits if he were to be dealt.
“Duran had a huge breakout season in 2024, posting the seventh-best WAR in the majors at 6.7. He overperformed his underlying metrics, though — i.e., had some lucky outcomes — and those metrics have regressed a bit this year. Now he’s underperforming them — he has been unlucky — so his true talent is somewhere south of that star-level 6.7 figure but better than the roughly 2 WAR (commensurate with a solid regular) he’s on pace for this season.”
Duran is still having a solid 2025 campaign. He is hitting .254 with 33 extra-base hits, including a MLB-leading eight triples. His speed is overwhelming if he can get the ball into the gap, and he plays a great defensive center field.
He is certainly the type of player who brings the New York Mets fully into contention for a National League pennant. Not that the Mets aren’t already good, because we know they are, but because adding another strong lefty bat to either hit first or second, or even fifth or sixth, would help this lineup out immensely.
The Case for Red Sox Making Trade
Now, the Boston Red Sox may certainly want to hold onto Duran, and that’s totally understandable. However, if they were to go the total youth movement and let the rest of this season just play out, this is a great opportunity to get a fruitful return for Duran, who is 28 years old and entering his prime.
As MLB’s trade deadline gets ever closer, keep an eye out for Duran to be in steady rumor conversations. He’s also linked to the San Diego Padres, who first inquired about him, and also other NL clubs like the Braves and Philadelphia Phillies.
The case for Boston dealing him makes sense; it’s just a matter of when the right time is, and what they can get in return for a potential hot commodity on the trade market.
