Mets-Rockies Trade Idea Sends 15-Home Run Outfielder to New York

The New York Mets have been active in the offseason trade market to this point. In late November, the Mets acquired Marcus Semien. However, the Mets are losing their key pieces to other MLB teams in free agency. Pete Alonso is now a Baltimore Oriole, and closer Edwin Díaz is on NL foe, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

As MLB’s Winter Meetings continue to take place this week, more rumors continue to swirl regarding trades and where the top free agents will sign. A recent report indicates that Colorado Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle is garnering interest in the trade market, and the Mets are one of many teams to check in.

Should the Mets Trade for Brenton Doyle?

The New York Mets are still searching for an outfielder. They may be in the running for two top free agents in Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker. After trading away Brandon Nimmo, aside from Juan Soto, the Mets’ depth is thin in the outfield.

Ari Alexander of NBC7 Boston reports that the Mets are among many other big MLB organizations that are interested in Rockies center fielder Brenton Doyle. The Phillies, Yankees, and Padres are other potential suitors.

Doyle is a two-time Gold Glove winner (2023, 2024), but his bat has yet to be a proven factor in his game. Over 126 games in his rookie season back in 2023, Doyle posted a 53 OPS+ and just 10 home runs in 431 at-bats. His 2024 campaign was much better, after he hit 23 home runs and .260 over 149 games.

Playing in Coors Field for an extended period of time should help a hitter like Doyle out, but he regressed again in 2025. In 138 games this season, the 27-year-old outfielder hit 15 home runs and posted an OPS+ of 72.

What Would the Mets Have to Give Up For Brenton Doyle?

The bright side for Mets fans this offseason should be the fact that they have many tradeable assets. In this mock trade idea, the Mets could give up either young arm Brandon Sproat or Jonah Tong, or MLB-level players in either Jeff McNeil or Brett Baty.

After losing Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz, the team from Queens must start to think outside of the box this offseason to improve their roster heading into next season. That’s a lot of production to replace, especially on offense, and the Mets’ current “projected” lineup is going to need improvements.

If the cost isn’t too steep, taking a flyer on Brenton Doyle if the asking price isn’t that high should be a no-brainer for the Mets.
