The New York Mets can breathe a sigh of relief about Pete Alonso.
After not starting Sundayâs series finale against the Cincinnati Reds because of a right-hand contusion, the slugging first baseman came on for defense in the seventh inning of the Metsâ eventual 3-2 victory to extend his consecutive games streak to 354.
âI donât really care about the streak,â Alonso said postgame via the Associated Press. âI just want to be out there and play every day as long as Iâm able to. Thatâs just who I am. And if Iâm able to play, Iâm going to strap it on and go get it. So, I was just really happy that my body allowed me to get out there today.â
Alonso, who was named an All-Star for the fifth time in his career earlier this month, is slashing .275/.370/.520 with 21 home runs and a team-high 77 RBI. He hit a three-run homer in the All-Star Game off Royals left-hander Kris Bubic.
Alonso, 30, had started the Metsâ previous 205 games dating to May 31, 2024. He is expected to return to the lineup on Monday when New York opens a three-game series at home against the Los Angeles Angels.
How Did Pete Alonso Get Injured?
Alonso told reporters he sustained the injury swinging in the batting cage prior to Saturdayâs 5-2 loss to Cincinnati. After his hand continued to bother him during the game, he underwent X-rays, which were negative.
âI took a normal swing (in the cage), but I got jammed off the machine during my pregame work,â Alonso said via MLB.com. âI went, âAll right, this is my last swing.â I really didnât think anything of it.
âThen, I caught one close to the label (in the first at-bat) and I really felt the pain again. The second at-bat, it felt horrible.â
After being replaced in the starting lineup by Mark Vientos, Alonso returned to a thunderous ovation from the sellout crowd of 42,981, which chanted his name.
When Did Pete Alonso Last Miss a Game?
Alonso has not missed a game since June 17, 2023, when he was wrapping up a stint on the 10-day injured list because of a left wrist bone bruise and sprain.
His consecutive games streak ranks second in the majors behind Braves first baseman Matt Olson (718 games).
Alonso, who signed a two-year, $54 million contract extension with New York in February, has 247 career homers, five behind Darryl Strawberryâs franchise record.
He hit 30 homers or more in five of his first six seasons in the majors, except for the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign when he had 16 in 57 games.
