Baseball is the most challenging game in the world for a reason, and the New York Mets have found that out the hard way over the past few weeks.Â
After looking like they had an opportunity to run away with the National League East just a few months ago, the Mets are now six games behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East. The Mets are 1-9 over their last 10 games, and not doing anything right on either side of the baseball.Â
It’s been an unfortunate situation for the Mets, but they simply can’t win games, as evidenced by their two one-run losses in three games against the Milwaukee Brewers.
While things have been ugly, Mets owner Steve Cohen recently spoke about it with Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Instead of showing any worries about the current situation to the guys in the clubhouse, Cohen stated that the team is still in a good spot and expects them to figure it out sometime soon.
âI know how vested our fans are in this team. While the team has had a difficult run, I still believe in our team and believe they will turn it around. LGM,â Cohen texted Heyman.
Why Have the Mets Struggled This Season?
The New York Mets’ problems have been from top to bottom. From base running issues, errors, pitching struggles, and most importantly, offensively, they haven’t found ways to win games. It takes all the little things to go on a nice streak in Major League Baseball, or even to win a few games here and there.Â
The Mets haven’t been able to do that, and according to skipper Carlos Mendoza, there’s an apparent reason why.
âJust continue to make mistakes,â Mendoza said, per SNY. âWeâre not playing good baseball. Especially when you are playing against teams like this, you give them extra outs, extra bases, they are going to make you pay, and that happened today. Yeah, not good enough.â
Nothing Has Changed in New York
Some New York Mets fans are panicking, and rightfully so. In some sense, this looks to be the same type of Mets team that it’s been for much of the past decade, despite all of the new faces in the lineup, on the mound, and in the front office.Â
However, President of Baseball Operations David Stearns, arguably the top executive in Major League Baseball, understands better than anyone that this is just baseball. He noted that, given the Mets’ talent, they believe they’ll be able to figure things out.
âWe have to trust that these are really good players,â Stearns said, per Ryan Herrera of MLB.com. âThey believe in themselves. As an organization, we certainly believe in them, and I have full faith that they’re going to snap out of this and we’re going to see a good offensive team.â
âThis is, at times, baseball, and it will drive you crazy when you have talented players who go through stretches like this,â Stearns said. âOver the last couple of weeks, we’ve really had a lineup that’s gone through stretches like this, where we haven’t performed up to our capabilities, and it is frustrating. Everyone is working as hard as they possibly can to get this turned around, and I think we will.â
The track record suggests that the Mets are well-positioned to win games if they can figure things out. For now, their priority is securing a spot in the postseason and potentially winning the division.
