The Detroit Tigers had one of the more impressive seasons in Major League Baseball before ultimately falling in the ALDS and having a historic collapse in the second half. Similar to the New York Mets in specific ways, the Tigers didn’t have the second half of the year they were looking for, which likely impacted how the year unfolded.Â
Now, some believe that the Tigers could help the Mets out in a blockbuster trade, with Manny Gomez of NJ.com proposing the idea of New York attempting to trade for Tarik Skubal, who might be the best in the game.Â
âPreviously, Stearns put his faith in his pitching department, which had previously shown an ability to get the most out of pitchers who were underperforming. After dismissing pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, itâs clear that a change of focus is coming. The solution would be to acquire an ace, either via trade or through free agency.
âThe biggest target is Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, who could get his second straight AL Cy Young Award this season. Some are already tying the Mets to Skubal,â he wrote.
What Will It Take for the Mets to Land Tarik Skubal
The thought of trading Skubal for the Detroit Tigers doesn’t make much sense. However, from the New York Mets‘ perspective, they understand they have all the money to pay him and the farm system to get a deal done. It was brought up by Jim Duquette, who stated that they’d have to move on from some of their top prospects for the Tigers to even consider a deal.
âHereâs what you get you in the conversation,â Duquette said, via X. âIt would have to be one of either Jett Williams or Carson Benge, probably pushing on Benge. Every team is asking for Benge right now. One of a (Brandon) Sproat or a (Jonah) Tong, and then another prospect, like a Ryan Clifford.â
Regarding where things stand on Skubal and the Tigers, too, there’s reason to believe that the Mets will have an opportunity to land him, with Scott Harris not making it seem like he has any thoughts on Skubal being on the roster past next season, as heâs ready to hit the free agency at the end of the 2026 campaign.
âI canât comment on our players being traded; I canât comment on free agents. I canât comment on other teamsâ players. Iâm going to respond by just not actually commenting on it,â Harris said, per Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press.
Tarik Skubal, Tigers at Odds Over New Contract
According to the latest report from Jon Heyman of the NY Post on Thursday night, Skubal and the Tigers are nowhere near each other in negotiations.Â
He even went so far as to say that Skubal and the Tigers are about $ 250 million away. If that’s true and the New York Mets are looking for an ace, Skubal could be right there for the taking.Â
âThe Tigers and superstar pitcher Tarik Skubal have a lot of work to do if theyâre going to bridge quite possibly the biggest gap in MLB negotiating history: an estimated quarter of a billion dollars. Yep, thatâs not a misprint. Itâs close to $250 million,â he wrote.
âDo they trade Skubal at a time theyâre likely to get 50 cents on the dollar? Soto and Mookie Betts were rare superstars traded heading into their walk years, and though Soto brought an OK return, the return on Betts was negligible. Do they keep Skubal until free agency? Or do they make another long-shot run at signing him?â
