Mets Trade Pitch Lands 2.72 ERA Starter from AL Seller

The New York Mets are one of the teams in Major League Baseball that are World Series or bust. After advancing to the National League Championship Series last season, they went out and signed Juan Soto to a $765 million contract. The lineup is one of the best in the NL, but after many injuries, the pitching remains a slight question.

New York is certainly going to be buyers at the July 31st deadline, but it’s just a matter of how big a splash they will make. Their top three starters are as solid as any team if Sean Manaea can be the guy he was down the stretch a season ago. And Clay Holmes has been the ace they had hoped, but they could use another depth piece.

Mets-Twins Trade Idea Sends Joe Ryan to New York

The Minnesota Twins have a choice to make this deadline, as they are unlikely to make the playoffs unless they get super hot to finish the year, and they have assets that teams like the New York Mets will certainly come calling for. In this trade pitch, Minnesota ends up selling ace Joe Ryan to the Mets.

Ryan was named a 2025 All-Star this year after a stellar and consistent first half. He has thrown 109.1 innings this season, and has 121 strikeouts with a WHIP of under 1.

However, the Twins made it clear it would take an “overwhelming” offer to ship off their ace Ryan. A team like the Mets, though, might be able to give them the type of deal that they are looking for. The Mets are in the middle of a tight division race with the Philadelphia Phillies, and they likely don’t want to be a Wild Card team for a second straight season.

What Could a Return Package Look Like?

If the Minnesota Twins were to sell, it would likely mean a complete overhaul of their roster, and the likes of Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax could be dealt as well. For Ryan’s sake, in a return package from the New York Mets, the Twins receive starter Frankie Montas, infielder Mark Vientos, and third-ranked Mets prospect Carson Benge. Even this may not be enough to acquire Ryan. The Twins would likely need a pitcher in the deal to semi-cover for Ryan’s production loss, and Vientos and Benge make sense because of their youth.

What makes Ryan cost so much isn’t just his level of production, but also because he is controllable for the next three seasons at a very low price. Ryan also seems to be settling into his own as a starter. In his fifth season with the Twins, he is posting career numbers and seems to be improving with time. This season was his first All-Star appearance.

As the deadline is just two weeks away, expect the Mets to make a big splash for either a frontline starter or a high-leverage reliever. New York is all-in this season, and owner Steve Cohen has shown a willingness in the past to make big deals to help improve the roster for a down-the-stretch run.
