Mets Trade Pitch Lands A’s $31 Million Southpaw Starter

The New York Mets are one of the few teams in Major League Baseball that are all-in on this season and have strong World Series aspirations. After being eliminated in the Championship series last year, they added Juan Soto and are putting together an impressive 2025 thus far, but could still make additions at MLB’s trade deadline.

One thing the Mets could use at the deadline is a depth starter. They have dealt with injuries in the rotation over the last few months, and have six pitchers on the Injured List currently. Although they have a solid overall rotation, there are depth issues, and they should inquire with the Athletics about a particular starter.

Mets Trade Idea Lands Jeffrey Springs

The Athletics are in the midst of another year of not contending, and should think about selling their tradable assets. The A’s are reportedly taking offers on two starters, Jeffrey Springs and JP Sears, and the New York Mets are a good fit for Springs. The A’s acquired him this past offseason, but considering how the season has gone for the team from Sacramento, it would be smart to move off him, and a team like the Mets could be there to jump on the chance.

Steve Adams of MLBtraderumors.com agrees with the assessment that the A’s could be sellers, and where things have gone wrong:

“Things have indeed gone poorly for the A’s in their first season away from Oakland. After a decent start, the A’s dropped 11 straight games in late May, picked up one win, and then dropped another nine in a row. The Athletics are 17 games under .500 and nowhere close to the playoff picture. They’ll be surefire deadline sellers, and the two-plus years of control over a solid and affordable veteran like Springs — who sat at No. 7 on our list of the Top 40 trade deadline candidates earlier this month — should pique the interest of pitching-hungry organizations.”

Springs missed the majority of both the 2023 and 2024 seasons with injuries, but has been a quality option this season. He has a 4.18 ERA in 114 innings and is on pace for a career high in innings. After making just 10 total starts in the past two seasons, he’s made 19 thus far this season, and would garner a good return for the Athletics.

What Would Springs Cost New York?

Springs signed a four-year deal worth $31 million with the Tampa Bay Rays a few years back, which makes him a relatively cheap option for the New York Mets, who are a team that can easily afford his contract. They could also use him in a bullpen role, which he used to appear in earlier in his career.

As far as what it may cost the Mets, they could send over a player like catcher Luis Torrens or infielder Ronny Mauricio. Either of those guys paired with a mid-tier prospect should be enough to get a deal done. With Francisco Alvarez back up, Torrens may not see as much playing time, and Mauricio has struggled in his time in the lineup.

Either way, Springs is the exact type of player the Mets should target, because he’s a quality arm that wouldn’t cost them a boatload of capital.
