Mets Trade Pitch Lands Recent World Series Hero to Fix Outfield Needs

The New York Mets need to make a final push heading into the trade deadline, as the team certainly needs to make a few upgrades. Among the options they could pursue is Adolis Garcia, whom Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report recently proposed the idea of trading for. He added that Garcia only has a few years left on his contract, and it’s possible that the Mets could get off cheap here. He meant that regarding a prospect package.

“The Rangers’ motivation for moving (García) will be offloading what is left of his $9.25 million salary, so the prospect return won’t be major, but they should be able to bring back at least one useful piece,” Reuter wrote.

“With Tyrone Taylor underperforming at the plate and Jose Siri sidelined with a fractured shin, the Mets have turned to Jeff McNeil in center field, while Ronny Mauricio is carrying a 30.1 percent strikeout rate as the team’s primary second baseman. Adding another potential option to the mix there should be a priority.”

Will the Rangers Be Sellers at the Deadline?

The Texas Rangers will have some tough decisions to make at the trade deadline. For a team like the New York Mets, they already know they’ll be buying. Unfortunately, the Rangers have been derailed by injuries again, and sit at 44-46, 11.0 games back in a tough American League West.

Some believe they could sell, but they’ve also played somewhat better than their record indicates, as they have a +25 run differential. However, when examining the situation, the Dallas News recently suggested that Garcia could be dealt, to help them save money for the future.

“Consider the third option: the estate sale. The value on deGrom and Eovaldi will never be higher. They’d save a combined $128 million over the next two seasons on both. Throw in Jon Gray, the bullpen, Adolis, maybe a surprise or two, then go shopping this winter.

“Except the problem with dumping big contracts is that you don’t get much in the way of prospects in return. Not to mention a sell-off would severely compromise the Rangers’ chances next season,” they wrote.

How Aggressive Will the Mets Be at the Trade Deadline?

The New York Mets have to understand that if they want to win a World Series this year, it might require them to get creative and not worry about the long-term future.

Even then, The Athletic recently looked at who the Mets have long-term, and there’s reason to believe the team will be very good over the next few years, given who they have under contract.

“The Mets have most of this group not only under contract, but under contract for a long time. They have team control of Juan Soto through 2039, Francisco Lindor through 2031, Brandon Nimmo through 2030, Mark Vientos, Brett Baty and Ronny Mauricio through 2029. Francisco Alvarez is signed through 2028, as are Jeff McNeil and Jose Siri through 2027.

“The main spots they will need to address this winter are at first base and designated hitter — both positions where it would behoove New York to maintain some flexibility. That way, the Mets can decide how aggressively to pursue a longer-term arrangement with Pete Alonso while figuring out where to fit their young players,” they wrote.

Despite Garcia only having another year on his deal after this season and struggling a bit, there were times throughout his career when he was one of the better hitters in baseball, just a few seasons ago. He blasted 39 home runs in 2023 and 25 a season ago. If he can give them another 15 in the second half and perform like he did in the postseason a few years ago, he’d be a great pickup.
