Mets Trade Pitch Reunited With Jacob deGrom for 2 Prospects

The New York Mets are expected to be active at the trade deadline, and there are several different ways the organization could proceed.

For a team looking to win the World Series, the Mets will undoubtedly be in the market for a starting pitcher. Currently sitting at 57-44 and just 0.5 games behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East, New York has a real opportunity to make the postseason and possibly win a World Series if things break its way.

A Heartwarming Reunion

When searching for ways to improve the New York Mets, Sports Illustrated proposed a trade idea to bring a familiar face back to town in the form of Jacob deGrom. Unfortunately, deGrom has a no-trade clause in his contract, so that will have to be factored in.

There are also reasons to believe that he doesn’t want to return to New York.

“Texas Rangers receive Mets No. 10 prospect and middle infielder Jeremy Rodriguez along with Mets No. 11 prospect and left-hander Jonathan Santucci.

“New York Mets receive right-hander Jacob DeGrom and $10 million in cash considerations.

“I added some cash in the deal for the Mets to help protect their trade investment in DeGrom. But the more cash the Rangers include in the deal, the better prospects New York will have to offer for the expensive pitcher.

“In this proposed trade, the Rangers received two top 11 prospects from the Mets organization. Rodriguez is the slightly higher-rated prospect, but he’s at Single-A. Santucci is at Double-A and is the top-rated left-handed pitcher prospect for the Mets,” they wrote.

deGrom’s Fit With the Current Mets

Sports Illustrated based this trade proposal for the New York Mets around the words of Joel Sherman about a month ago. Sherman noted that deGrom would be the most intriguing fit for the Mets.

“Let’s deal with the most intriguing name first: Jacob deGrom. I do not think the Rangers want to concede. DeGrom has a full no-trade clause. Routine and comfort are huge to him, and there are those who have played with deGrom who think he and his family are comfortable in Dallas and he would not waive his no-trade…

“But here’s the big thing — when he pitches, he still pitches great. He has a 179 ERA-plus, which is better than his career mark of 157, which is fourth best ever. DeGrom is a Game 1 starter, yet just might be too risky and costly even if the Rangers decided to sell and the righty waived his no-trade. But wouldn’t a return to Flushing be something,” he wrote.

During the 2025 campaign, the right-hander, most importantly, has managed to stay on the mound. Throughout deGrom’s career, there’s no debate that he’s arguably been one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball history.

All New York Mets fans understand that.

However, the injuries have piled up, as he threw in 11 games in 2022, 15 in 2021, six in 2023, and three in 2024.

He has 19 appearances and 112.1 innings under his belt this season, and while his strikeout stuff is down with just 113 in that span, he still owns a 2.32 ERA.
