The New York Mets are expected to make more major moves ahead of the 2026 season. Team officials have already traded away Brandon Nimmo and failed to re-sign free agent slugger Pete Alonso. They are now linked with trading away a former top-five prospect to help continue their roster revamp.
The Athletic’s Will Sammon claimed on December 15 that New York is actively listening to offers for three of their players. Perhaps the most notable name of the trio is Mark Vientos. ESPN’s Jorge Castillo echoed this report a day later. The corner infielder was previously rated as the fourth-best Mets prospect in 2022.
Vientos was so highly-rated in recent years that he was seen by some to be Alonso’s potential heir. Nevertheless, Vientos regressed as a hitter in 2025. After smashing 27 home runs in just 111 games the year before, the infielder hit just 17 long balls in more opportunities during the most recent campaign. Vientos also posted a lower batting average, slugging, and OPS in 2025.
Due to his drop in offensive and defensive stats, Vientos essentially lost third base to Brett Baty. Despite featuring at the hot corner for over 100 games in 2024, Vientos made just 72 appearances at the position in 2025. Because of this, the Mets nearly traded the former prospect to the Chicago White Sox for Luis Robert Jr. in the summer. An agreement between the two sides, however, never materialized.
Recent Moves by the New York Mets Squeeze Mark Vientos Out

GettyMark Vientos struggled in 2025 after a solid showing the prior season.
Alonso’s departure could have opened up a position for Vientos to play in 2026. Instead, the Mets opted to bring in Jorge Polanco on a two-year, $40 million deal. The former Mariner is expected to feature at first base for New York. Along with bringing in Polanco, the Mets also acquired second baseman Marcus Semien from the Texas Rangers. This move essentially cements Baty’s place at third.
With space for Vientos now limited, Mets management could use him as trade bait to address other needs. While New York has picked up multiple infielders, their outfield is very much up in the air. At the moment, Juan Soto is perhaps the only Met outfielder sure of a starting spot.
New York could reignite their previous interest in Robert Jr. The White Sox are seemingly likely to deal the slugger during the current offseason. The Mets are also chasing top free agent outfielders Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger. As it is extremely unlikely that the club signs both of the stars, New York could swap Vientos to fill the remaining spot in their outfield.
Fans Urge Mets to Trade Vientos, but it Comes With Risk
MLBTradeRumors.com recently posted a poll asking Mets fans whether or not their beloved team should trade Vientos this winter. An overwhelming number of supporters opted to vote ‘yes’ to the question. Potentially trading away the power hitter would be risky, though. While his numbers have dropped, Vientos just turned 26 and does not become a free agent until 2030.
Giving up on Vientos so soon could have immense consequences. The Mets would be embarrassed if the former prospect could get back on track in the near future with a new team. If so, this would come directly after New York also failed to bring back Alonso.
