Miami Dolphins Add Depth at Position of Need

The Miami Dolphins have made an attempt to address their tight end situation by signing Chris Myarick. According to Pro Football Reference, Myarick hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2022 when he started eight games for the New York Giants.

NFL agent Paul Sheehy announced the signing on X Monday.

“A “pro’s pro!” Great example of a veteran taking care of business and always staying ready to go!,” Sheehy posted with childlike enthusiasm. “Congratulations to TE, @cmyarick on signing with the @Dolphins! Chris enters his 7th season and began his career in Miami. LET’S GO, CHRIS! #ProStarFamily.”

Myarick was released from the Houston Texans practice squad in October of 2024.

Chris Myarick is most likely just tight end depth

Before Dolphins fans start planning a parade, it should be noted that Myarick is a warm camp body at this point. They have suffered a number of injuries at tight end that Sports Illustrated’s Dante Collinelli sums up succinctly.

“The Dolphins likely need an additional body in the tight end room due to some injuries,” Collinelli writes. “2025 UDFA Jalin Conyers hasn’t practiced in at least four days and has been spotted at training camp walking around with a boot.

“Additionally, offseason trade acquisition Darren Waller remains on the physically unable to perform list as he returns to football shape after coming out of retirement. That leaves the Dolphins with just Pharoah Brown, Julian Hill, Hayden Rucci, and Tanner Conner as healthy tight ends.”

Who will start at tight end for the Dolphins?

The bottom line here is that the Dolphins still have not found an adequate replacement for recently traded tight end Jonnu Smith. Of course, you’ll remember that Smith was shipped to the Pittsburgh Steelers along with cornerback Jalen Ramsey in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Smith made the Pro Bowl in 2024 after catching 88 balls for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. He then wanted more money and the Dolphins showed him the door. As of right now, Miami doesn’t have anything close to Smith that can approach that production.

If the Dolphins had their druthers, Darren Waller would start and be some facsimile of what he was with the Las Vegas Raiders. In 2020, Waller was an animal, catching a whopping 107 passes for 1,196 yards and nine trips to the end zone. However, Waller was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list at the start of training camp.

Waller admitted recently that there were times in his career that he lost his passion for the game, but is hoping he can recapture his love in Miami.

“That joy has kind of been elusive,” Waller said. “But I’ve always found moments where it came back. It’s something I have been able to experience, and I feel like that’s possible this time around.”

Waller also said that his PUP designation is largely so he can get back into NFL shape.

“I’ve been in shape and doing a lot of crazy different workout things in my retirement, but it hasn’t been football specific movements,” Waller said. “So there needs to be a solid foundation that’s laid before just going out there, because I’m going to want to go 120 percent, so sometimes you have to save me from myself.”

For what it’s worth, Myarick will certainly get his opportunities to shine. Given the Dolphins’ current tight end situation, a few good preseason moments could earn him a spot on the 53-man roster come Week 1.
