It’s been noted that the Miami Dolphins could be teetering. On one hand, they have enough talent and firepower to have a strong season. On the other hand, it will only take one or two things to go wrong for the entire season to go south.
Of course, Tyreek Hill could always say something that gets him traded at any moment. And, how confident can you be in a defense relying on an overhauled secondary and a few players up front coming back from injury (not to mention Chop Robinson got carted off the field this morning)?
But, the big question is always the health of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Sure, they are relying on him for a big season, but if he were to go down for any length of time, the season is toast. Look no further than today’s joint practice with the Detroit Lions. Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com didn’t give a glowing review of Dolphins’ backup QB Zach Wilson.
“Detroit’s second-team defense got a trio of interceptions from Whiteside, Kennelly and Hallett off Dolphins quarterback Zach Wilson,” writes Twentyman, who has been covering the Lions for as far back as I can remember. “The Lions have been emphasizing takeaways, and coaches and players always say they come in bunches. In this 7-on-7 period that was certainly the case.”
Three? You said the second-team defense, right?
More poor play from Zach Wilson, but he’ll still be No. 2
Twentyman’s account sounds on-brand based on what Wilson did in the first preseason game against the Chicago Bears. In the first half, he was 4-8 for 91 yards and took three sacks. That’s not even to mention the Pick 6 he should have thrown to Bears’ cornerback Terrell Smith at the end of the half.
The problem isn’t so much about how awful Wilson is, but what choice do the Dolphins have? Wilson’s backup is rookie 7th-round pick Quinn Ewers from the University of Texas. On Sunday, Ewers completed five of 18 passes for 91 yards while getting sacked twice and fumbling twice. Who is ready for some 2025 Dolphins football?
Jaleel Grandberry of Phin Phantic says the backup quarterback job is already a foregone conclusion though and that’s not good.
“Through multiple weeks of training camp, and one preseason game, the battle for the QB2 job seems to be over,” Grandberry writes. “The veteran Wilson is clearly in position to be the backup quarterback in Miami. That’s the way he’s been listed on the depth chart throughout camp, and after Week 1 of the preseason, it will likely stay that way.”
Quinn Ewers is so bad that Texas fans are worried about Arch Manning
Everyone’s favorite new Manning is starting to worry some University of Texas fans and he hasn’t done anything wrong. After watching Ewers’ performance in the Dolphins’ preseason game, they are wringing their hands because Ewers beat out Arch Manning as the starting quarterback in back-to-back seasons.
So, if Manning couldn’t be out that guy, how good is he really?
Andrew Holleran of The Spun gathered up some social media responses to Ewers’ poor play:
“Just a reminder that Arch Manning couldn’t beat out this guy Quinn Ewers in 2 full seasons,” one fan wrote.
“Arch Manning? The guy who couldn’t beat out Quinn Ewers?” one fan added.
“Arch couldn’t unseat him tho 😤,” another fan wrote in response to Ewers’ final stats from Sunday’s game.
The Dolphins situation is dire unless Tua plays the entire season and doesn’t miss any time. Then, you can go ahead and ignore all of this. But, if Wilson or Ewers has to start a few games it could get ugly down in Miami.
That’s a lot riding on the fragile health of one guy.
