The Dutchman was forced to withdraw from Thursday’s Premier League event[/caption]
Former UK Open finalist Vincent Van der Voort, a close friend of Van Gerwen, was with him throughout the ordeal and spoke candidly on the Dutch podcast Darts Draait Door about what unfolded.
He said: “Michael hurt himself in the afternoon—it was really unfortunate.
“He was trying on some shirts for his sponsor, and as soon as he put one on, he said something didn’t feel right. He could barely move his neck.”
Despite the discomfort, Van Gerwen was determined to try and compete.
Van der Voort added: “He went to a physiotherapist, had a massage, even took muscle relaxants.
“He gave it a go, but it just wasn’t happening. We ended up going back to the hotel, packed up, and drove home. I was back home by 2 a.m.”
‘The Dutch Destroyer’ admitted he knew early on that it wasn’t going to be MVG’s night.
He revealed: “During the warm-up, he still couldn’t turn his head properly. That’s when he knew it was over and he pulled out immediately.
“You could tell he was in serious pain. He was stiff, quiet—completely unlike him. Normally, he’s the loudest guy in the room.
“But this time, he was just suffering. It was a complete disaster of a day.”
World No.3 Van Gerwen plans to return to action this week on the ProTour at the Players Championship 11 or 12 —provided his recovery continues to go smoothly.
Seven-time winner Van Gerwen is currently third in the Premier League and faces Chris Dobey this Thursday on Night 11 at the AO Arena, Manchester.
