What has unfolded at Michigan over the past three years is the kind of saga that feels destined for documentaries. Sherrone Moore’s firing — and the legal issues that followed — will likely become a chapter of its own. But in the meantime, the Wolverines still need to find their next head coach.
Michigan is now behind in the coaching carousel. Other Power Four programs acted early. Virginia Tech fired its head coach back in Week 3 of the season and had already hired James Franklin two weeks before the regular season ended. Soon after, programs like Florida, LSU, Auburn and others filled their openings.
So where does that leave Michigan? Lane Kiffin, everyone’s top candidate, is now in Baton Rouge. Most Group of Five standouts have already landed Power Four jobs. Kalen DeBoer appears set to remain in Tuscaloosa, and Kenny Dillingham is reportedly in line for a new extension at Arizona State, according to Blake Niemann of Fox 10 Phoenix.
At this point, the Wolverines may need the board to reset — or lean into familiarity.
Michigan May Have Interest In John Harbaugh
It has been an unceremoniously rough season for the Baltimore Ravens, who sit at 6-7. They are coming off a Week 14 loss to division rival Pittsburgh and are now out of the wild-card picture, with their only playoff path requiring them to overtake the Steelers for the AFC North.
If Baltimore misses the postseason, the conversation surrounding head coach John Harbaugh could become relevant to Michigan’s search, according to Justin Spiro.
“They are going to kick the tires on John Harbaugh, who may be gently getting shoved out of Baltimore” Spiro said. “I have no idea what John Harbaugh thinks about this, but I know some key people — multiple key people — at Michigan are very intrigued by the idea.
“Do they get back into the Harbaugh business, the family? I don’t know. I know some key people up there like him, and they will have a role in this decision as they formulate this list.”
Harbaugh has been with the Ravens for 18 seasons, winning a Super Bowl in 2012. Since then, however, Baltimore has reached the AFC Championship Game just once, frequently exiting in the wild-card or divisional rounds. Given the level of talent on recent Ravens rosters — including multiple MVP seasons from Lamar Jackson — many believe expectations have gone unmet, with Harbaugh bearing some responsibility.
Michigan Hiring John Harbaugh Would Be Extremely Risky
Even if John Harbaugh became available, the question remains whether Michigan should pursue him — especially given the name attached.
The Wolverines are only a few years removed from a national championship, but that achievement has been overshadowed by everything that followed. Jim Harbaugh departed for the NFL before his suspensions related to the Conor Stalions sign-stealing scandal could be enforced. Moore, Jim Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator during that era, was ultimately fired in a separate but equally damaging situation.
While the circumstances are different, the pattern would be hard to ignore.
If Michigan is serious about stabilizing the program, it may need a complete reset — one that goes beyond the current staff and even extends to the Harbaugh name itself. A clean slate might be the only way forward.
