Michigan Football Reveals Stunning Reason Why Coach Sherrone Moore Was Fired

Michigan stunned the college football world by announcing the program fired head coach Sherrone Moore. The university released a statement revealing that Moore was fired “for cause.” Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel revealed that there is “credible evidence” that Moore had an improper relationship with a Wolverines staff member.

“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” the university detailed in a December 10, 2025, statement, per Yahoo Sports. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

“This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior. Biff Poggi has been appointed head football coach in an interim capacity, effective immediately.”

Here’s what you need to know about the surprising turn of events with the Michigan football program.

Former Michigan Coach Sherrone Moore Was Detained by Police Hours After Being Fired

Things took even more of a twist following Michigan’s announcement. Moore was later detained by police in Saline, Michigan, hours after the university fired the coach, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Dan Wetzel.

“The City of Saline Police Department assisted in locating and detaining former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore,” the police department noted in a statement to ESPN. “Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges.”

Michigan Begins a College Football Coaching Search at a Less Than Ideal Time

Now, Michigan has the challenge of conducting a coaching search when the majority of top candidates have already found new jobs. Other top coaches have signed contract extensions to remain at their current schools.

Michigan firing Moore with cause should allow the university to avoid having to pay an expensive buyout to the former coach. Instead, the Wolverines can put these resources towards hiring a new coaching staff.

The early signing period already started for college football on December 3, 2025. Additionally, the next transfer portal window is fast approaching on January 2.

Michigan Rumors: Who Will Be the Next Michigan Coach?

Moore went 17-8 during his two seasons as Michigan head coach, but his tenure will be defined by scandals. The Michigan coach was suspended for his involvement in the sign stealing saga. Now, Moore’s time in Michigan ends for a different reason.

Who will Michigan turn to next? Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer and Washington’s Jedd Fisch are two coaches who have been linked to Michigan.

“Currently in his second season with the Crimson Tide, Kalen DeBoer was rumored to be tied to the Penn State opening earlier this cycle,” On3’s Pete Nakos wrote in a December 10, story titled, “Michigan Head Coach Hot Board: Top candidates to replace Sherrone Moore.” “That was never going to be a factor. But DeBoer will surely be a factor in the Michigan search, sources have told On3.

“He has consistently won as an FBS head coach, bringing Washington to a CFP title game berth and now having Alabama in the playoff in his second season in Tuscaloosa. He would have been a popular name at Michigan when Sherrone Moore was hired, but he accepted the Alabama job before the Wolverines were in the market.”
