Mike Forde Says NASCAR Still Hasn’t Decided on 2026 Playoff Format

As NASCAR enters the offseason following the controversial 2025 Cup Series finale, where Kyle Larson’s win was overshadowed by late-race chaos involving Denny Hamlin and William Byron, the push for playoff changes has intensified.

Mike Forde’s recent Hauler Talk comments underscore the internal deliberations. While fan sentiment leans toward scrapping the playoffs for a full-season points system, NASCAR’s leadership continues to carefully weigh all options.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s insights, on the other hand, revealed a behind-the-scenes conversation with Steve O’Donnell that gave fans a glimpse of what might be coming.

Mike on Post-Committee Uncertainty and the NASCAR Playoff Format

NASCAR’s Managing Director of Racing Communications, Mike Forde, addressed the playoff committee’s final deliberations in the November 11 episode of Hauler Talk, emphasizing that no major announcements will come until after the 2025 champion’s celebration to preserve the finale’s spotlight. He highlighted ongoing internal reviews, noting NASCAR leadership will soon “lock ourselves in a room and figure it out.”

Forde said the playoff committee had completed its work and that all necessary feedback had been collected. “Where it stands right now. I don’t think the playoff committee is going to meet again. I think we have gotten all the feedback that we needed from them. Awesome job, by the way, from the playoff committee.”

“Now, it’s in NASCAR’s hands,” he said. They’re going to take all the feedback they got from every walk of life and every thought on the spectrum from no playoffs whatsoever to keeping it how it is and really beating that all up. They are announcements to come. Honestly, I don’t know where it is. It could be in two weeks, it could be in two months.”

“We clearly want to make sure that we have been very thorough on this one. Obviously, it will be before Feb. 5 in The Clash, but it could be sooner than later; it could be in January. I don’t know, I don’t think anyone knows just yet. Still discussions to be had on where we are in the discussion of the playoff format. I think we feel good about the directions and the possibilities here because of the playoff committee and the work that they’ve done and the feedback we got from the industry.”

While Forde ruled out a complete return to the pre-2004 points system, he didn’t dismiss all change. He hinted that certain elements, like playoff point bonuses, could be reconsidered or even removed.

The challenge, he said, is balancing fan-driven calls for a more consistent championship with the current system’s proven advantages, higher TV ratings, and stronger race attendance.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Shares Key Exchange with Steve O’Donnell

Dale Earnhardt Jr. added context to the ongoing discussions, sharing details from his post-race encounter with NASCAR’s Chief Operating Officer, Steve O’Donnell.

“I had an opportunity just by chance to exit the race track Saturday night with [Steve] O’Donnell, walking through the Cup garage as the 2 team was celebrating their championship,” Earnhardt Jr. said.

“I said, ‘Hey, Steve, a lot of people talking about the Cup stuff, we know that’s probably coming in terms of a change to the format, but nobody ever says a thing about the Xfinity or Truck, and I guess we’re all just assuming that whatever happens to Cup, something similar will happen.’”

According to Earnhardt Jr., O’Donnell confirmed that assumption: “Yeah, something similar will happen.”

A formal decision on the NASCAR playoff format is expected by early 2026, possibly in January, just ahead of the February 5 Clash at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
