Mike Macdonald Is Trying Not to Think About Losing Klint Kubiak to Raiders

The Seattle Seahawks are Super Bowl champions after defeating the New England Patriots. It was a dominant defensive performance from Mike Macdonald’s squad, as they pressured Drake Maye all night and held the Patriots to just 13 points.

Though it wasn’t the Seahawks’ best offensive performance of the season, they were able to move the ball enough to keep it from becoming a close game. After the game, offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak confirmed to NFL Network that he’s going to be the next head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

He was one of the best additions the Seahawks made in the offseason. Last year, the offense struggled, which led to Ryan Grubb being fired as offensive coordinator. Kubiak was brought in to replace him and quickly turned the offense into one of the best in the NFL.

He was an important part of the Super Bowl run, and Macdonald knows it. The coach was not eager to discuss Kubiak’s departure after the Super Bowl win, and is holding off on thinking about it for now.

“We love Klint, he’s done a great job, but I haven’t about it yet, so … think about that later,” Macdonald told Heavy Sports during the post-Super Bowl press conference. ”

Kenneth Walker Praises Kubiak

One thing about a Kubiak offense is that he’s going to run the ball early and often. That was a winning strategy against the Patriots.

Running back Kenneth Walker carried the ball 27 times for 135 yards and was named Super Bowl MVP. The passing game wasn’t working well, so Kubiak really leaned on the run.

The Seahawks had to settle for a lot of field goals, but they were at least able to move the ball consistently. Walker spoke about Kubiak’s importance following the big win.

“He was very important. He always wanted to get better,” Walker told Heavy Sports when asked about Kubiak’s importance to the Seahawks. “He put the ball in the playmaker’s hands. He made a great impact on our offense. He brought us all the way here, and we won a Super Bowl.”

Can Kubiak Lead a Quick Turnaround?

Kubiak has a major task ahead of him. Many coaches have tried over the course of the last two decades, but they’ve all failed to turn the Raiders around.

It’s a historic franchise, but they haven’t won a playoff game since 2002. The Raiders recently tried to get on track with Pete Carroll as head coach, but that ended in disaster.

Kubiak will have his work cut out for him. That said, it’s not impossible that he could lead a quick turnaround. The Raiders have some exciting pieces on offense with tight end Brock Bowers and running back Ashton Jeanty.

Kubiak helped turn Walker into a Super Bowl MVP, so he could take Jeanty to even bigger heights. Plus, he’s likely to get Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. A playoff run in 2026 is going to be tough, but the Patriots were one of the worst teams in the NFL in 2024 and made it to the Super Bowl a year later with a young quarterabck a first-year head coach.
