It has become quite clear the the future of Mike Mcdaniel is growing to be highly uncertain and will be the most intriguing storyline of the offseason. His comments yesterday may say otherwise.
After his fourth season in charge ended with a whimper, and an embarrassing losing record to boot, Mcdaniel addressed the rumors surrounding his job security.
McDaniel Addresses Job Security Amid Growing Uncertainty
“I’m operating the same way I always have,” McDaniel said of his future. “No one is entitled to anything. I take the job serious. I will aggressively attack the job tomorrow, like every day I have the job.”
While this certainly leaves a sense of ambiguity surrounding his future, it seems as if Mcdaniel will approach any comments about his future with a candid honesty. This is all also coming amidst an intense search for the next general manager of the team that saw Troy Aikman join the staff in an advisory position.
With Mcdaniel’s customary day after season media session scheduled for this afternoon, chances are only more questions will begin to arise. Most importantly, this will be the first time he won’t have a general manager by his side answering any end of season questions as well. The onus will largely fall on Mcdaniel providing a sense of clarity. Unfortunately, it may not come just yet.
Second-Half Struggles and the Search for Accountability
Another interesting facet of Mike Mcdaniels’ postgame comments stemmed from addressing certain areas of weakness for the team and how he would improve on them. This was the second straight game that after halftime, the Dolphins struggled on both sides of the ball. While Mcdaniel clearly made it a point of emphasis in his comments, it’s what he said in terms of how he will adress them that will raise eyebrows.
“You know, each game is unique to its own,” McDaniel said. “This game I didn’t feel like specifically, it didn’t feel on the field like the Pittsburgh and the Cincinnati game. However, it kind of played out that way. And I think I have a strong motivation to take the offseason to kind of figure out what we can do, from a controllable standpoint, from a schematic standpoint, from how we operate because the game’s won in the second half.”
For a coach who has been on the hot seat basically from Week 9 onwards, those are confident words, especially after a backbreaking loss. Still, it goes to show Mcdaniel’s mindset headed into important discussions about his future with the franchise.
