Mikel Arteta is hopeful Gabriel Magalhaes will be fit enough to feature in Arsenal’s Premier League game against West Ham on Saturday.

The Gunners’ matchwinner against Newcastle last weekend was substituted as a precaution during the closing stages of the midweek victory over Olympiacos.

Arteta has plenty of defensive options should the Brazil international not recover in time with summer signing Cristhian Mosquera an able deputy.

Asked, however, if Gabriel would be in contention to start against the Hammers, the Arsenal manager said: ‘We have to wait and see until after training, but we weren’t too concerned about him.’

Another new recruit, meanwhile, Piero Hincapie, is not yet ready to make his return.

The versatile defender, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has been restricted to just one subsitute appearance so far and is still missing with a groin injury.

Arteta, however, hopes to have the Ecuador international back after the upcoming international break.

‘He will be available after the international break,’ confirmed Arteta. ‘So we’ve been trying to do everything as fast as possible but this came too fast.

‘And now we have the international break, and hopefully after that he will have a couple of sessions with the team and be ready to go.’
