The Dallas Mavericks are at a predictable crossroads. Last season, they won the NBA Draft Lottery but lost Kyrie Irving to a torn ACL. Irving is expected to be back in January at the very earliest, although even the most diehard Mavericks fans know that’s wishful thinking.
Without a point guard, Dallas has already shown signs of struggle. Early returns point to Cooper Flagg not being a lead ball handler, and the Mavericks have been urged to make a trade.
With Irving’s return still a major question, the Mavericks might have to make a deal to add a healthy PG to the roster sooner rather than later. Of course, an All-Star won’t come cheap. Luckily, the Mavericks have shown in recent seasons that they aren’t afraid of wheeling and dealing.
In an ironic twist, the Mavericks could add a player who was briefly on their roster for just a few minutes.

Mock Trade Sends Trae Young to Dallas Mavericks
In 2018, the Mavericks selected Trae Young fifth overall before trading him and a future pick to the Atlanta Hawks for Luka Doncic. Young has blossomed into an All-NBA point guard, leading the league in assists last season.
However, the Hawks don’t seem to be interested in committing big money to him, instead focusing on a young core of Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels, and Zaccharie Risacher.
Instead of letting him walk in future free agency, the Hawks could demand a massive trade package for their prized guard.
Full Mock Trade Details
- Dallas Mavericks receive: Trae Young
- Atlanta Hawks receive: Kyrie Irving, Caleb Martin, 2029 first-round pick (via LAL), 2030 first-round pick (SAS swap rights), 2031 first-round pick swap, 2032 first-round pick
There is an argument to be made that Irving is just as good as Young, although he doesn’t fit with the Hawks’ long-term plans. On top of that, he could very well be a shell of himself once he returns. The Hawks add to their pile of draft picks, allowing them to swing for a future star down the road.
Dallas, meanwhile, gets a significant upgrade over D’Angelo Russell.
Dallas Mavericks Under Pressure to Make a Move
After the Mavericks traded Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, Nico Harrison announced a three-year title window. The first season was lost to injuries, and the second season is not off to the best start.
Flagg demonstrated that he can’t be tasked with running the offense in his debut. To be fair, no one really expected him to slide over to point guard, although Dallas has made it clear that development is not a high priority.
With Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson playing massive roles, the clock is ticking in Dallas.
After the recent loss to the San Antonio Spurs, Jason Kidd cited a lack of offense for the Mavericks’ struggles. By adding one of the league’s best playmakers to their frontcourt core, Dallas can re-emerge as title contenders.
