The Boston Red Sox pulled off one of the most shocking trades in MLB history on Sunday night when they sent superstar designated hitter to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, James Tibbs III, and Jose Bello. Immediately after the deal was announced, fans began comparing it to another massive deal the Red Sox swung that involved them sending Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
With Betts looking for a massive new contract, Boston opted to deal him to L.A., who promptly signed him to a 12-year, $365 million contract extension. Betts has since helped the Dodgers win two World Series titles, and now, he’s watched his former Red Sox teammate get shipped out of town in a similarly polarizing deal. When asked about the trade, Betts offered an interesting response.
Mookie Betts Speaks on Rafael Devers Trade
Betts and Devers were initially teammates together in Boston, helping the team win a World Series in 2018. Over the ensuing years, the Red Sox systematically destroyed that team, with Devers being the final remaining player from that team. Now, they both will be playing in the National League West, in addition to Xander Bogaerts, who the team let leave for the San Diego Padres in free agency.
When the Sox traded Betts, David Price, and cash considerations to the Dodgers, they received Alex Verdugo, Jeter Downs, and Connor Wong in return. Considering how Betts has won a pair of championships, and Wong is the only remaining player from that deal still with Boston, it’s safe to say that Los Angeles resoundingly won that trade.
Now, it’s deja vu all over again with Devers getting moved in a deal that has Red Sox fans up in arms. Betts knows what it’s like to be in Devers shoes, but when he was asked about the trade, he didn’t provide much of an answer, simply labeling it as another “crazy” move by Boston in what is quickly becoming a long line of them.
“I just thought it was crazy,” Betts said. “Nothing really to say, it’s just crazy … I genuinely don’t care. It just is what it is … I’ll see him real soon and I’ll be laughing and joking with him as I always do.”
Dodgers Face Stiff Competition Amid Rafael Devers Arrival in NL West

While the Dodgers are still leading their division, they have faced stiff competition from the Giants and the Padres. A rash of injuries, particularly to their pitching staff, have not helped them, but they are beginning to get healthy in that department, with two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani set to make his first start since 2023 against San Diego on Monday night.
The addition of Devers will only make San Francisco better, and it’s clear they are throwing all their chips on the table right now as they attempt to make a World Series run. Betts and the Dodgers are used to getting chased down by the rest of the league, though, and they will be hoping that the return of several key pitchers will propel them on a nice run ahead of the All-Star break.
