Multiple Maple Leafs Players Listed As Trade Candidates

The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to have consistency elude them in what is their first full season without the services of forward Mitch Marner, who was dealt to the Vegas Golden Knights during the offseason in a major sign-and-trade deal.

However, the good news for the Maple Leafs is that their recent fortunes have turned for the better with a 6-2-2 record in their last 10 combined games. Their most recent triumph came in dramatic fashion on Tuesday evening, pulling a victory from the jaws of defeat against the Chicago Blackhawks.

But the Maple Leafs, who have experienced multiple injuries to several key players, may not be done dealing.

According to the latest Trade Board from The Athletic, there are a pair of Maple Leafs players who have high potential to find themselves on the move before long.

A pair of Toronto Maple Leafs players could soon be moved

According to The Athletic, the two most likely candidates to be traded at some point this season by the Maple Leafs include forward Matias Maccelli, who is skating in his first season with Toronto, and defenseman Brandon Carlo, skating in his first full season with the club.

Maccelli, 25, is a first-year Maple Leafs player after he was traded from the Utah Hockey Club (now known as the Utah Mammoth) during the offseason to Toronto in exchange for a conditional third-round draft pick.

The Finnish native was selected in the fourth round (98th overall) by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2019 NHL Draft, and has tallied four goals with five assists in the 22 games that he’s played so far this season.

Recently, NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman linked him to the Boston Bruins as a potential landing spot.

“I heard Boston had poked around him last year when he was available. I don’t know if that’s still the case now, Friedman said on Friday’s episode of his “32 Thoughts” podcast. “But you always look at who were the other teams that were maybe interested in acquiring him.

“I know the Bruins were there. I know they’re still looking for a scoring winger. I’m not sure if Matias Maccelli’s going to be their guy still, or they look for someone else.”

Speaking of the Bruins, that’s the club the Maple Leafs acquired Carlo from at last season’s NHL Trade Deadline.

Carlo, 29, has been limited to just 18 games so far this season and has a pair of assists. He recently underwent surgery earlier in the month and could be absent until some point in January.

He’s under contract for the remainder of this season as well as next season with a $4.1 million cap hit. Meanwhile, Maccelli can become a restricted free agent following this season, and his current cap hit is $3.425 million.

Toronto has been anything but healthy this season

The Maple Leafs have been beset by multiple injuries so far this season to multiple key players in addition to the aforementioned Brandon Carlo.

Team captain Auston Matthews has missed several games, while goaltender Anthony Stolarz hasn’t played since early last month and shows no signs of any kind of imminent return.

Goaltender Joseph Woll has missed time with an injury, while defenseman Chris Tanev hasn’t played since Nov. 1.
