Myles Garrett Has Solemn Message for Browns After Loss

There are a few ways to cope with a miserable NFL season while you are still in the midst of that miserable season. You could be happy-go-lucky, always looking on the bright side. you could be short-tempered and angry all the time. Or you could, like Browns star Myles Garrett, get philosophical with it.

Certainly, Garrett has ample cause for some existential angst, as he is living in two worlds. In one, he is putting forth arguably the greatest individual defensive season in league history–though he will be quick to point out that his teammates and the Browns defense in general deserves credit. In the other, he is playing for the 3-11 Cleveland Browns, a team that can’t get out of its own way.

Garrett moved nearer to breaking the all-time single-season NFL sack record on Sunday in the Browns unsightly 31-3 loss in Chicago. He was credited with 1.5 sacks, giving him 21.5 on the season, now in the shadow of the 22.5 collected by Giants great Michael Strahan. Alas, the Browns are well out of playoff contention, and there isn’t much to play for in the final three games of the year.

Myles Garrett Urges Browns: ‘Don’t Go Gently Into the Night’

Just don’t tell that to Garrett, who spoke to the Browns media about how to approach the rest of the season after the Chicago loss and started quoting Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Garrett is taking these final games seriously, and expects his teammates to do likewise.

“Take it one game at a time, don’t look at the record,” Garrett said. “Look at the man beside you, it could be his last game. Could be his last game in the NFL, could be his last game here. It could be your last game. Don’t go out with a whimper. Don’t go gently into the night.

“You keep on fighting and you want to be remembered for your very last play, your very last game. You want to go out on the best note possible because that’s your legacy. With your team, with your family and for you personally when you lay your head down at night, you want to be proud of something. Go back yourself proud. Go make your family proud. Go make your team proud.”

Browns Laying a Foundation for 2026

And Garrett does make a good point about this Browns roster. It is going to change, and with 14 rookies in place, the team will need to take advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow, even if the score is a blowout. The Browns now have six wins in the past two years, and Garrett is hoping there is enough improvement down the stretch to be optimistic for next year.

“You gotta build a stable foundation with the young guys and show that no matter what the record is, what the score is, you’ve got to come out and be yourself. …” he said.

“As long as there is time on the clock, dig deep and go find it. You can say that for the season and for like. Don’t shy away from obstacles or struggle. It is going to be there. It’s really a test of a man, who you are when those come.”
