Sports nicknames can acquire a life of their own. The right nickname can define an athlete’s legacy just as much as their basketball achievements, from Magic Johnson to Karl Malone.
Nate Bittle, an Oregon center, has a slightly different story to tell. Bittle is a player who had a great nickname, ‘The Alligator,’ but it never gained popularity. At first glance, it is a solid moniker. This is the perfect fit for a 7-footer who protects the rim and dominates the paint, thanks to its strength and fierceness. Although there is potential, ‘The Alligator’ has been mainly utilized. It was an inside joke from his AAU days that was never brought to the Ducks’ locker room.
The Origin of âThe Alligatorâ
Bittle revealed the origins of his nickname to R.org during Big Ten Media Days.
âI played for Ryan Silver, (Director of) West Coast Elite AAU program, and there was one summer, Ryan was just giving everybody animal nicknames,â Bittle explained. âAnd somehow I got the alligator, and it stuck until now.â
A coach gave his players fun animal names, which led to the creation of a nickname in a lighthearted way.
This nickname stayed in place, at least on paper, unlike other nicknames that fade quickly. Bittle’s continued success on the court didn’t make ‘The Alligator’ a part of everyday conversation.
The Rule of Nicknames: You Canât Choose Your Own
In the classic sitcom Seinfeld, there’s an unwritten rule about nicknames: you cannot give one to yourself.
Your nickname is a natural one, typically given to you by teammates, friends, or fans, and it cannot be changed once it’s established. Your identity is shaped by it.
Bittle’s situation is unique in this regard. The nickname is technically present, but if it isn’t used or recognized regularly, it’s almost as if it never existed. When asked about it, Oregon head coach Dana Altman confirmed what was being said:
âWe donât call him that,â Altman said. âBut I guess it goes back to his AAU days. Iâve never called him Alligator, Iâve never heard any of his teammates call him that.â
Lessons from âThe Alligatorâ
A few valuable lessons can be learned from Nate Bittle’s nickname story, despite its brevity. Authenticity is not something that can be forced, not just in sports, but in life as well.
Controlling how others perceive you is similar to trying to make a nickname stick. To establish a genuine reputation, one must act consistently, rather than relying on catchy labels.
In addition, it serves as a reminder of humility. Despite receiving a powerful nickname, Bittle has never leaned on it for attention or branding.
In an age where self-promotion often overshadows performance, he has the rare ability to let his play speak for itself.
While The Alligator may not be a nickname that echoes through arenas, it is a perfect fit for Nate Bittle in its own quiet way. A strong and steady presence who does not require a flashy title to make an impact is perhaps the best kind of nickname story there is.
