The Memphis Grizzlies have had a middling start to the 2025-26 campaign, as they have a 3-3 record through their first six games. After spending the past couple of years engulfed in drama, things were fairly quiet for the Grizzlies to begin the season, but that changed after star point guard Ja Morant earned a one-game suspension from the team for conduct detrimental.
After Memphis’ most recent loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, Morant seemed to take a shot at head coach Tuomas Iisalo and the rest of his staff when discussing the loss, which led to his aforementioned suspension. Now, questions about Morant’s future with the Grizzlies have resurfaced, with NBA insider Shams Charania recently addressing the possibility of a trade involving the embattled guard.
Shams Charania Dishes on Potential Ja Morant Trade
Over the past few seasons, Morant’s tenure with the Grizzlies has become one of the top storylines across the league. Morant earned himself a pair of suspensions in 2023 thanks to a slew of off-court gun incidents, and he has continued to struggle to keep himself out of trouble since then, with this brief suspension being the latest example of that.
Memphis is holding out hope it can figure things out with Morant because of how good he is when he’s on the court. At his best, Morant is one of the most dynamic offensive players in the league. There aren’t many players who are more skilled finishers at the rim than Morant, and he is skilled at balancing his scoring and playmaking duties as the team’s point guard.
With the Grizzlies going out of their way to hand down this suspension on Morant, though, it’s fair to wonder just how much longer the two sides will be able to get along. With that in mind, Charania recently opened up on the possibility that Morant could get traded, saying that teams are keeping tabs on his status, even though Memphis has made it clear it is looking to move past this situation.
“The teams across the league, though, are monitoring this, keeping an eye on where this relationship stands between Ja Morant and the Grizzlies,” Charania revealed on “SportsCenter.”
Should the Grizzlies Trade Ja Morant?

The Grizzlies find themselves in a real tough spot with Morant currently. They have invested a lot in their quest to make him the focal point of their team, but things may be reaching a breaking point with Iisalo. If these two guys can’t get along, it seems more likely that the team will move on from Morant than Iisalo at this point.
It’s clear Memphis doesn’t want to have to trade Morant, but when push comes to shove, it could end up being the only way to solve this problem. A fresh start could be beneficial for both sides, but for the time being, it doesn’t seem like this is something the Grizzlies’ front office is entertaining. Memphis will be back in action on Sunday night, as they will take on the Toronto Raptors without Morant’s services.
