NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal has threatened to “punch” retired NFL player Robert Griffin III, also known as RGIII, for his controversial comments about Chicago Sky star Angel Reese.
RGIII had earlier re-posted a photo of Reese depicted as a monkey on the NBA 26K cover, along with a lengthy message condemning the racism directed toward the young WNBA star. However, he also criticized Reese for inciting a lot of hate due to her apparent rivalry with Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark. The football player-turned-analyst revealed that he and his family received “death threats” for his earlier comments that Reese “hates” Clark, a sentiment that he has maintained.
“People in Angel’s inner circle called me and told me I was right and Angel Reese has grown to hate Caitlin Clark because of the media always asking her about Caitlin and being constantly compared to her,” he wrote. “Some people made it about race, but I never did and never will. Instead of becoming the villain in anyone’s story, I decided to just not.”
Shaq Sends a Warning to RGIII
Reese would accuse RGIII of fabricating lies, noting that no one from her inner circle had contacted the former football player.
“lying on this app when everybody know the first and last name of everybody in my circle for clout is nastyyyy work,” she wrote on Instagram, via Yahoo Sports.
Shaq ripped the former Washington Commanders player for inciting unnecessary hatred with his comments on social media.
“RGIII, tweet another monkey post about my girl Angel Reese and I’m gonna punch you in your f—ing face,” O’Neal said on his Off The Record podcast, via CBS Sports.
“K. It’s enough. Like, I don’t usually do stuff like this but stop it, bro,” Shaq continued. “You got your job, you got your podcast, leave my Angel Reese alone. I’m the one calling her and telling her not to respond, f—ing stop it. That’s the last time. K. Thank you.”
Shaq and Reese Share LSU Bond
The four-time NBA champion also disagreed with RGIII’s take that the Reese versus Clark rivalry stems from genuine hatred.
“That’s not real hate,” Shaq said of the Reese versus Clark situation.
“You look around at what’s going on in this real country, that’s hate. This is sports, I’m not supposed to like you. It’s a shame that all the stuff you did in your life, you’re gonna be remembered for your podcast. That should tell you you’re not that f—ing great. I don’t want to be remembered for Shaq’s big podcast. I do not. Like leave those girls alone. You already spoke on it. Let it go. So what? He hates her. So f—ing what? I hate you now for messing with her. Now what? Say something about me.”
It’s not surprising that O’Neal took such a firm stance defending Reese, a fellow LSU alumnus. Shaq has been firmly in Reese’s corner since her college days and through her arrival in the WNBA. According to multiple reports, he helped recruit her to Reebok, where she signed one of her first major NIL deals while still in college.
