New Red Wings Trade Pitch Brings Top-4 Defenseman To Detroit

The Detroit Red Wings had a lot of issues keeping the puck out of the net in 2024-25. And to that end, they addressed their defense and goaltending with some of their offseason moves. Chief among them, the Red Wings traded for John Gibson in a deal with the Anaheim Ducks.

Detroit’s defensive signings are a bit of a mixed bag, though. Jacob Bernard-Docker could play a role in Hockeytown this season. He is only 25 and has a realistic path to the roster. However, veteran Travis Hamonic is likely depth at this point. And he may even be sent to the AHL full-time this season.

The Red Wings wanted to make a splash on the blueline this summer. Detroit was heavily linked to Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad in NHL Free Agency. However, Ekblad never made it to the open market, re-signing with the Panthers before the market opened.

As a result, the Red Wings are in need of a top-four defenseman. Ideally, they need someone who is not afraid to throw the body. But his main role will be blocking shots and shutting down opposing offenses.

To this end, there is an intriguing option out there for the Red Wings. With this in mind, Heavy.com is proposing the following trade between Detroit and the Vancouver Canucks:

Detroit Red Wings acquire: Tyler Myers

Vancouver Canucks acquire: Justin Holl, Eemil Viro, and a conditional 2028 second-round pick that becomes a first-round pick if Detroit advances to the Eastern Conference Finals before the 2028 NHL Draft.

Tyler Myers is Still An Effective Defenseman

Myers is 35 years old, but this is not an unorthodox move for Detroit. The Red Wings acquired both Nick Leddy and Jeff Petry when both were on the other side of 30. This move, though, is geared more toward short-term success.

The Canucks defenseman is getting up there in age. However, he remains an effective defenseman. In fact, his 3.0 Defensive Goals Above Replacement last season, per Evolving Hockey, made him one of Vancouver’s best defenders on the blueline.

Myers is still willing to put it all on the line, as well. The 35-year-old has recorded 100+ shot blocks in each of the last four seasons, and in five of the last seven campaigns. Moreover, he isn’t too afraid to throw the body, recording 197 hits over the last two seasons.

The Red Wings certainly could go after a more flashy name to fill their second-pairing need. However, Myers is more than able to do the job, and he won’t cost nearly as much as other options.

How Myers Would Fit Red Wings Blueline

As mentioned, Detroit needs a second-pairing defenseman. Myers slots right in on the right side of the second pairing. And his arrival would bring other changes to Detroit’s defensive look.

The Red Wings are currently expected to have youngsters Simon Edvinsson and Albert Johansson on the second line. However, Johansson is a left-shot, so moving him to the left would be ideal.

Myers allows Johansson to move back to the left. Moreover, the young Red Wings defender can move down to the third pairing. This is a role he may be best suited for.

This trade proposal gives the Red Wings some intriguing options. Most of all, though, it gives Detroit’s defense a much-needed injection of talent and stability heading into the 2025-26 season.
