New York Jets rookies are set to report on Saturday, July 19. It is unclear if Mason Taylor will be there for the green and white.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport revealed on Saturday, July 12, that Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Tre Harris became the first official holdout of training camp.
“With 30 of the 32 second-round picks unsigned because of a disagreement over guaranteed money, Harris makes the first official stand,” Rapoport added.
Taylor is one of the 30 rookie second-round picks who remain unsigned ahead of training camp.
The deadline for #Chargers rookies to report is upon us and second round WR Tre Harris is officially a holdout, sources say.

NFL analyst Alex Katson said on social media that this is “gonna take a while to resolve league wide.”
“[An] underrated part of this is that R2 contracts are bottlenecked at BOTH ends. 34/35 got fully guaranteed deals, but 65 only got 1.5m guaranteed. [The] back half of R2 is waiting for things to swell in their direction, so 36 & 64 are both stalling,” Katson explained.
The Root of the Problem for the Jets and the Rest of the League
“Texans GM, Nick Caserio seemingly set a new NFL draft rookie contract precedent in giving their second round pick, Jayden Higgins a fully guaranteed contract. 30 of 32 second rounders haven’t signed now because they too want fully guaranteed contracts 💰,” Jacksonville Jaguars beat reporter Travis Holmes explained on X previously Twitter.
Caserio isn’t the only one to do it; Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry also jumped on that train. UCLA rookie linebacker Carson Schwesinger also received a fully guaranteed contract as a second-round draft choice this offseason.
“The top two picks in the round, Cleveland Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger and Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins, reportedly received fully guaranteed deals — the first fully-guaranteed contracts for second-round picks,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed.
It has never happened in NFL history before.
“The Texans contract with Jayden Higgins has completely disrupted signing prospects like nothing we’ve seen in the history of the sport. 30 of 32 are still unsigned, and we are coming up on actual camp,” Lance Zierlein of the NFL Media Group explained on social media.
“Every other GM is going to get in line to fight Nick Caserio at Combine next year lol,” NFL analyst Brett Kollmann joked.
“30 of 32 2nd rounders unsigned due to guarantees while the league gets hammered about an attempt to collude over QB guarantees. Nothing to look at here,” NFL analyst Justis Mosqueda said.
Jets and Taylor Need to Do What Is Best for Business
Taylor participated throughout the entire Jets offseason programs since he was drafted, despite not having his deal done. That won’t continue in training camp.
As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk pointed out, the second-round rookies “won’t be practicing (or even [be] present) without signed contracts.”
Here are the facts of the matter: Taylor is playing for the Jets in 2025. He is not going to hold out the entire 2025 season and re-enter the 2026 NFL draft.
With that being an accepted fact, it behooves the Jets and Taylor to work through this so he doesn’t miss any valuable training camp practices.
“The problem is simple to explain, far from simple to solve. Before 2025, no second-round picks had received fully guaranteed rookie contracts. With the Texans giving receiver Jayden Higgins, the second pick in round two, a fully-guaranteed deal, the issue was framed,” Florio explained.
“The Browns quickly gave linebacker Carson Schwesinger, the first pick in round two, a fully guaranteed deal. They had little choice, once the player taken immediately after him got a fully guaranteed contract. For the next 30 picks in round two, no deal has been done,” Florio said.
Neither the Jets nor Taylor should completely bend the knee, but compromise is the true solution.
Taylor has the best chance of making an immediate impact by not missing any practice time. The Jets don’t want to join the conga line of NFL history being made for second-round picks. Meet in the middle, get the deal signed, and fast forward through the awkward stare-down and just get right to business.
