New York Mets Land Baltimore Orioles All-Star Pitcher in Blockbuster Trade Idea

The New York Mets have had a solid first half of the 2025 season, but have not been playing good baseball as of late. They recently lost 3 of their last 13 games and were swept by the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates.

That stretch of losing has to do in large part with their slipping pitching staff. While their staff numbers are still overall good, the Mets have lost a couple of arms to the Injured List, and the bullpen is becoming heavily relied on. As MLB’s trade deadline looms, keep an eye on the Mets to be buyers, and potentially improve that pitching staff. As for the Baltimore Orioles, they are one of the most interesting teams in baseball as July progresses. Baltimore is out of the playoff race and has many assets that teams could come calling for, including a flamethrowing reliever.

Mets Linked to Orioles’ Felix Bautista

There have been rumors over the past few days that the New York Mets are in on Baltimore Orioles closer Felix Bautista, who is having a stellar 2025 season.

In ESPN.coms “Player every team should trade for/away”, writer David Shoenfield agrees with the sentiment that New York should go for the 2023 All-Star closer.

Bautista has two more years of team control and is having a productive season. This is a good opportunity for the Mets to add another big-time reliever to pair with Edwin Diaz. Huascar Brazoban was solid in the first couple of months of the season, but had a poor June, likely due to over-usage by manager Carlos Mendoza. While the Mets may also be shopping for another position player, that doesn’t feel like it’s the team’s top need. New York should get some of those injured starters back soon, but having two big-time right-handers in the back of the bullpen that can both close out games would help out greatly.

Bautista Putting Together Another All-Star Campaign

Bautista missed all of the 2024 season due to injury, but has come back looking like his old self. In 29.2 innings this season, he has a 2.73 ERA with 43 strikeouts. Bautista is a true strikeout artist, and he also has 16 saves, which is good for nearly half of the Baltimore Orioles’ wins this season. This is a great opportunity for the Orioles to sell off Bautista and get a good return that would likely include a couple of the New York Mets’ top prospects, and maybe another position player. This season has been a disaster for Baltimore, and it’s all stemmed from a bad pitching staff, but Bautista has been a real bright spot.

For the Mets, they are 3-14 since June 13th, and are now a couple of games behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East. There is still plenty of time left in the season, but the Mets’ bullpen appears to be shot and is now a real sore spot for the team. This trade idea feels like a real benefit for both sides, and as MLB’s July 31st deadline looms, the Mets will certainly be making multiple calls to multiple teams regarding bullpen help.
