New York Rangers Prospect Named as Possible Early Trade Candidate

The New York Rangers are working through some issues early in the 2025-26 season. For instance, the Rangers have struggled to score goals this year, particularly at home. However, the discussion around this team is not specific to their on-ice performance.

Some discussion has been had around prospect forward Brennan Othmann. He is a former first-round pick of the Rangers. But he hasn’t shown a ton in his NHL opportunities. Furthermore, he didn’t make the roster out of training camp. He was sent to the AHL to begin the year.

This has started a discussion around his future with the team. There are roster spots to be won in New York. In fact, the team carried a rookie — Noah Laba — on the roster out of camp. For whatever reason, the Rangers didn’t see enough from Othmann to bring him with them.

It appears as if his time in New York might be coming to an end. The Athletic’s NHL insider Chris Johnston compiled a list of early trade candidates for the 2025-26 season. And he named Othmann as one of those candidates.

“The Rangers system is stocked with wingers, including the 16th pick from 2021, and they’re gauging the market on those players. While certainly not in a position where they feel they have to move Othmann, they’d be willing to part with him at the right price,” Johnston wrote.

Brennan Othmann Is No Stranger To Trade Rumors

This is not the first time Othmann has come up in trade rumors. In fact, this isn’t the first time an NHL insider has mentioned the possibility. Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that teams around the NHL are interested in making a move for the former first-round pick.

“Othmann was sent down to AHL Hartford after failing to make the NHL team, and, since that occurred, there’s been conversations with other clubs about his future. The Rangers have a lot on the wings and it simply may be that he needs a fresh start elsewhere,” Friedman wrote.

Of course, it’s still extremely early in the season. Teams are likely checking in on a number of things, trying to figure out what could be a good move for them. These sorts of trades will be determined by a number of different factors.

Still, it’s clear that Othmann may not be long for Broadway. Teams in the league are monitoring his situation. Once the time is right, a move could come down the pike.

Would Rangers Trade Othmann This Season?

New York has a case for and against trading Othmann. The former first-round pick is still a young player. He’s only 22 and can find his stride if given the time to figure things out. There may still be untapped potential there.

At the same time, there is depth on the wings in New York, as Johnston and Friedman have pointed out. The Rangers have more exciting prospects coming through the ranks. The opportunity may not be there for Othmann in New York.

If Othmann is generating interest, a trade feels more likely than not. However, it all depends on whether they get an offer they can’t refuse. Only time will tell if something like that comes across the table on Broadway.
