Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali helped Newcastle beat 10-man Chelsea 2-0 on Sunday in a big boost to their Champions League hopes.

Tonali opened the scoring after just two minutes in Newcastle’s first attack, slotting in at the back post from Jacob Murphy’s low cross.

Chelsea were reduced to 10 men in the 36th minute following a VAR check as striker Nicolas Jackson elbowed Newcastle defender Sven Botman.

The Blues were the better side for much of the second half despite Jackson’s red until Guimaraes killed the game late-on at St James’ Park.

The result means Newcastle move up to third in the Premier League and Chelsea’s hopes of securing Champions League football have taken a hit.
