Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford after agreeing personal terms with the former Manchester City ace.

Trafford, a £15m signing for the Clarets in 2023, impressed during his debut Premier League campaign at Turf Moor.

Vincent Kompany, though, was unable to keep the Clarets in the Premier League.

The Magpies desperately missed Nick Pope after the England ace missed a large part of last season through injury.

Eddie Howe wants competition for the returning Pope, and the club have turned their attention to Pope after failing in a move for Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal.

Though an initial £16m bid has been turned down, the Daily Mail say a deal is getting increasingly close as Newcastle near Burnley’s £20m asking price.

Personal terms have now been agreed with Trafford, who has made it clear he wants to move to the north-east.

The goalkeeper was cut from England’s 33-man provisional squad for the European Championships, and is now free to resolve his club future.

Newcastle will not play European football next term after Manchester United’s victory in the FA Cup final.

The Magpies qualified for the Europa Conference League through their 7th place finish, but Chelsea will now take their spot following United’s victory.
