The NFL has announced its punishment for usually unproblematic superstar Ja’Marr Chase after an on-the-field dustupwith All-Pro defensive back Jalen Ramsey on Sunday.
“NFL suspended Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase for spitting at Steelers DB Jalen Ramsey,” ESPN insider Adam Schefter reports. “Chase denied spitting at Ramsey, but the league determined the video evidence was sufficient to warrant a suspension.”
Chase’s act resulted in a 15-yard penalty on the
Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as an ejection for the starting safety Jalen Ramsey. Chase was unpenalized and remained in the game.
In addition to the suspension, the NFL announced that Chase will face a hefty fine.
“The suspension would cost Chase his weekly paycheck of $448,333 along with a $58,823 per game active bonus he would be forfeiting,”
ESPN’s Ben Baby reports. “In announcing the suspension, the league cited the section of the rule book that applies to ‘any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.’”
Reports indicate that Chase intends to appeal the suspension that was announced at 4:30 Monday afternoon. But as it stands now, Chase will be inactive for Sunday’s bout against the
New England Patriots.
“WR Ja’Marr Chase can appeal his suspension, which would be heard and decided upon by either Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster or Jordy Nelson, the hearing officers jointly appointed by the NFL and NFL Players Association,”
writes Patriots insider Mike Reiss.
Head Coach Zac Taylor Speaks On Jalen Ramsey Incident
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor spoke to the media Monday regarding his biggest star’s actions.
“First of all, I’ve always been impressed with how Ja’Marr has handled himself,” the head coach began. “He is in a lot of these situations where he has a target as a top player—he has a lot of respect that way. So guys do a lot of things to try to get his attention and get him off his game.
“I’ve always thought it was unbelievable how he’s handled himself in some really high-pressure emotional (situations).”
The head coach went on to criticize Chase’s actions after allowing the known agitator Jalen Ramsey to best him.
“Obviously what happened is crossing the line; we can’t have that, and I know he’ll own up to that,” Taylor continued. “But beyond that, I’ve always sat up here and praised Ja’Marr because he’s one of the best leaders we got.”
Chase Denied Spitting On Ramsey
Immediately following Sunday’s game, reporters piled around Chase’s roster to ask him about the incident. When asked if he spit on Ramsey, Chase responded, “I ain’t never opened my mouth to that guy.”
“He didn’t like some of the swears I told him, so I’m sure something got under his skin,” Chase said to a reporter that asked why Ramsey punched him.
His closing remark was an emphatic “I didn’t spit on nobody.” However, the video evidence that the NFL reviewed seemed to show differently.
